DALWOOD, Adrian Burt, age 58, passed away suddenly after a brief illness on April 22, 2017 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. He is predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Joan Dalwood. Adrian will be lovingly remembered by his sons David and Samuel, wife Cheryl (née North), brother Andrew (Debbie) Dalwood, sisters Susan (Kevin) Brabant, Alexandra (Blaine) Sanderman, Kathleen (John) Rozmahel, and Margaret (Alan) Younghusband, as well as his many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Adrian was born in Edmonton on February 27, 1959, the middle of six children, and grew up with a large extended family in Edmonton, California, England, and Wales. Adrian graduated with a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alberta in 1990, and enjoyed a successful career as a librarian in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Chicago, and rural Alberta. He ended his working career as a Records Technician with Husky Energy in Calgary.

Adrian was an avid reader and enjoyed football (New England Patriots), baseball, movies, theatre, classical music, and opera. He also had a lifelong love of radio. After graduating from high school, Adrian worked briefly as a disc jockey at a radio station in Red Deer (alongside sports broadcaster Ron MacLean) before pursuing post-secondary studies at Grant MacEwan College and the University of Alberta. Adrian will be remembered for his great radio voice, which he put to good use as a volunteer lay reader at church and at VoicePrint, an audio broadcast service for the blind and vision-impaired.

Adrian had a deep love of God that sustained him throughout his life. He was a seminarian at St. Joseph Seminary in Edmonton before pursuing university studies, and served as a lay minister in the Episcopal Church in Chicago and as an administrator with the First Church of the Nazarene in Calgary. Most recently, he had been attending Victoria Alliance Church and was an active participant in the Men’s Ministry.

Adrian loved to serve others. Throughout his life, he enjoyed volunteering his time at a variety of organizations, including a crisis line in Edmonton, AIDS Care in Chicago and, most recently, AIDS Vancouver Island in Victoria. Adrian was also a lifelong student of the violin, starting as a child in Edmonton and continuing in Calgary and, most recently, at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

Adrian and his family moved to Victoria in 2015 and his time on Vancouver Island, though short, was filled with contentment, new friends, and long walks by the ocean.

Adrian touched the lives of many people with his deep compassion and concern for others, and will be deeply missed.

Our family sincerely thanks Adrian’s medical team for their care and compassion and extends our deep gratitude to the staff of the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Jubilee Hospital.

A private family celebration of Adrian’s life will be held at Rosehill Cemetery in Edmonton on July 8.

In honour of Adrian’s lifelong love of music and charitable spirit, the Adrian Dalwood Memorial Bursary in Violin has been established at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

I just learned of Adrian’s passing today. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Adrian and I met at St. Joseph’s College on the University of Alberta campus where he quickly took a freshman student under his wing and helped guide me through the rigours of university life. We became good friends, room mates and co-workers at Rutherford Library. Rest in peace, my brother!

His obituary was very interesting. Things I never knew about Adrian. The gift you gave us as a wedding present still hangs in our living room. I would love to hear from you.
