Agnes Josephine Chamney (née Stuckel) passed away peacefully on October 10, 2016, in Victoria.

Agnes is survived, and lovingly remembered, by her children: Eileen (David Heft), of Victoria; Lyle, of Calgary; Aaron (Margo née Siegel) Chamney, of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren Shannon, Connor, Brendan (Amanda née Kelly) and James Leddy, Sarah, Elizabeth and Kaleb Chamney, and Justin Siegel; great-grandson Ben Knudsen; all six of her siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Stuckel family emigrated to the Lake Lenore district of Saskatchewan from Millerville, Minnesota, in 1919 when Agnes was six old. She grew up on the homestead and later moved to Humboldt, when her parents retired. There, she met Wilf Chamney and the couple married when he returned from military duty at the end of WWII. The loving couple adopted and raised their three children in Humboldt. Later in life, they enjoyed their winters in Phoenix, Arizona.

Agnes was a wonderful, caring homemaker: she was a great cook, seamstress, gardener and handyperson, as comfortable with a sewing needle as she was with a hammer and nails. She loved her home and garden and was especially proud of her peonies and lupins. She loved being in the outdoors, in nature, taking long walks and cycling.

After her children left home, Agnes took driving lessons and bought a car. She also took up bowling, and joined a local seniors’ choir. She loved music and she enjoyed dancing with Wilf as her partner.  She kept the homefront going, as Wilf built and grew the family business, Humboldt Flour Mills. The couple took their children, as they were growing up, on many wonderful trips, and later, she and Wilf travelled the world and had many great experiences.

chamney-agnes-young-webAgnes loved to be busy. She loved spending time with her family and maintained close and lifelong relationships with her grandchildren, her brothers and sisters, (now deceased) and her nieces and nephews. Her chronicling of the Stuckel family relationships was a lifelong project: she left behind thousands of photographs, many that had been passed down to her, from preceding generations.

After Wilf retired, the couple moved to Saskatoon. When Wilf passed away, in 2000, Agnes spent a few more winters in Arizona, where her son, Aaron, resided. Some years later, Agnes moved from a retirement community in Saskatoon, to Sidney, BC, where her daughter, Eileen, resided.

The family would like to thank the amazing staff at the Gorge Road Hospital, Waterview Unit, and Doctors Troughton, Abed, Vaughan and Muller, who provided such wonderful care at the end of Agnes’ life.

Agnes’ children held a private memorial for her, in Sidney, BC. Her cremated remains will be interred, next to Wilf, her husband of 56 years, in the Humboldt Roman Catholic Cemetery, in the summer of 2017.

Our condolences. Agnes was a friend of my Mom’s. I and Mom visited her in Humboldt at her beautiful home. She gave me curtain reminents I made into baby quilts to give away. Jerry and I visited back and forth in Az. with them one winter. We played lots of cards. Your parents were such gracious people. Now they are together again. God bless you all.
