Amory Russell Shields of Duncan and formerly of Victoria, Kincardine and Ottawa peacefully passed away at Sunridge Place in Duncan, BC, on Monday July 17, 2017 at 90 years of age. He was the beloved husband of the late Norma Shields; loving father of Stephen (Gail), Greg and Robert; proud grandfather of Kevin, Mark, Jason, Sara, Scott, Elizabeth and James; treasured great-grandfather of Elliot, Erica and Ryan.  Amory was predeceased by his brother, Eric. He will be fondly remembered by sister-in-law, Jean Humphrys and many cousins in and from Meaford, Ontario, as well as nieces, nephews and friends.

Amory grew up in the farming community of Meaford, worked for Manufacturers Life Insurance in Toronto following WWII, and in 1952 realized his dream of becoming an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. Following an eventful naval career in Victoria, Regina, Hamilton and Ottawa, Amory joined the Department of National Defense as a civilian. In 1988, Amory and Norma retired to Kincardine, Ontario and then made their final move to Victoria in 1996. Amory’s thoughtful kindness, sense of humour and constant love for his family will be forever missed.

Interment to take place at Lakeview Cemetery, Meaford, at a later date.

Stephen I was very saddened to read the passing of your Father. He was a wonderful gift to St. Andrews Church and many others who he enjoyed. I enjoyed sitting with him while you played your music entertaining so many at Amica. He was so proud of you. Yesterday I was at Amica and walked by his room 211 reminding me of our good laughs together only to come home to read his Obituary.

My thoughts are with you and your family at this time.

    Dear Shields Family,

My wife and I thank the Lord for bringing Stephen and Gail along to our church in Victoria. They have been a real blessing to us and the church. Through them we learned of Mr. Shields’ declining health. I, along with our Assistant Pastor, had the privilege of meeting Mr. Shields just two days before his Home-going where he is now enjoying the fellowship which he is now experiencing in the presence of his God and Saviour! My time with Mr. Shields was a time of my heart bring enriched. I thank God that we could read some Scripture to him, sing some hymns and pray for him. May God bless you all with the comfort that only He can dispense – for He is the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:2-4).

All the best to you Stephen, and sorry about your Dad.

  • Timothy Janzen

    Dear family of Mr. Shields,

We grieve with you in the passing of Mr. Shields.
It was such a privilege to meet Mr. Shields, a great man of courage, faith and humour. His refined politeness, his unquenchable joy and positive attitude, his gratefulness for the small things, and his wonderful smile will stay with us forever. Mr. Shields trusted Jesus Christ, and the greatest comfort we can find is in the fact that Mr. Shields is rejoicing in the presence of Jesus Christ right now.

As you, his family members and friends, seek comfort and healing in the passing away of Mr. Shields, our prayer is that you will find the deep peace and comfort that only our loving God can give. Please know that we as Capital City Baptist Church in Victoria pray for you and would love to be of any help to you where we can.

” …that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14)

    Sincerely,

Pastor Timothy Janzen and the Capital City Baptist Church-Family

Steven, Although we are encouraged to mourn for the passing of a loved one, we are also told that those that die in Christ are immediately in a FAR better place for eternity. The sadness of the former is to be ameliorated by the fact of the latter. God bless you and your extended family and give you both peace and joy. Les
