With great sadness, we announce that Ced passed away peacefully in Victoria, BC October 11, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born August 13, 1948, in Ladysmith, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, to Gordon  Leonard and Frances Mabel Anthonisen. Predeceased by his parents, sister Carol and brother-in-law John Armitage. Survived by his loving family: sisters Denise Armitage and Pamela Bates (Gordon); former wife Debra Grand (Bob); sons Roy (Chin), Brent & Brian; grandchildren Dena, Roan & Trevor (their mother Cecille); nephews, Chris Dorrington (Elizabeth) & Glynn Bates (Melissa); niece, Cherish Dorrington (Craig Lawrence), Jennifer Bates (Trish); grand nieces and nephews, Tiffany (Ian Beliveau), Danielle & Jennifer (Ryan Vallee), Kelty & Karl,  Selena, Emilie & Tristan; great grand nieces and nephews, Riley, Ella, Marek, Ronin & Luka; relations all over the world, and special friends Chris Thomas and the Vowles family.

Immigrating from SA to Canada in 1955, Ced lived in Peterborough with his family, adapting easily to cold snowy winters, a backyard skating rink, and shovelling snow! The family moved to Victoria in 1959. Right from his first newspaper route as a young boy, after high school (Vic High), he was keen to tackle work and do his best. Gardening was a joy, and being the family’s ‘green thumb’, Ced grew beautiful roses, a variety of vegetables, and 2 majestic Sequoia trees. Ced was a generous, kind and gentle soul, who gave so much of himself to others, offering not just “his shirt” but his coat, once given to a stranger in the hospital bed beside his. Ced lived with his ailments without complaint. He was a very private person, a thinker. Ced was also witty, making us laugh often, and enjoyed radio talk shows. A devoted “hockey dad”, who took all 3 sons to practices and games in their early years and was proud of their accomplishments. A devoted, kind son, Ced gave his parents much of his time and attention in their dotage.

We will miss Ced. He gave so much of himself to others and will remain always in our hearts.

In keeping with his quiet nature, a Private Family Gathering will be held to honour Cedric.

Thank you to the doctors and nurses for Cedric’s care in the ICU at VGH, during his last short stay.

If so desired, donations to the BCSPCA Wild ARC  sca.bc.ca/locations/wild-arcp or to a charity of your choice in memory of Cedric, would be appreciated.

    Joan Main – South Africa – 1 November 2017

Cedric was my cousin, our mothers were sisters. We were small children when I saw him last. The family stayed with my family before immigrating to Canada. I think, from what I can remember, we had a lot of fun in our garden. We had fruit trees and lots of green grass to play on. Cedric was like my brother, Ronnie, gentle and quiet and loved by everyone. I remember one Christmas we all sat in a room under the house, where it was nice and cool in the December heat, we sang Christmas carols and the older children held candles. My condolences to Cedric’s children and their families. Also to Pam and Denise and your families. My love goes out to you all. Cedric will never be forgotten.

  • David Cliff

I do remember well those early growing up days with Cedric. We were both such rascals and got into some real mischief. But they were good days, and passed by so quickly. I am so sorry to hear of Cedric’s passing and feel sad that I lost touch with him. David Cliff

I’m so sorry to hear of Cedric’s passing. He was a big part of our family until we moved from Victoria. Cedric and I shared the same birthdate, although I was many years younger. For many years he always made sure of saying Happy Birthday, which he continued to do by sending cards to me after we moved. Cedric was a warm hearted man with a beautiful smile. I’m sure he will be dearly missed by many. God Bless, Adele

  • Joe & Karen Vowles

With our Deepest Sympathy we feel your loss. Cedric was like a brother to our family when we were growing up. Cedric spent a lot of time at our house in town and at our farm on Burnside road. Cedric worked with us and our father during the summer months. Cedric often stopped to chat at our place on Brookview when visiting his sister until we moved May 2016 to Oliver B.C. I think of Cedric every morning as I have a nice coffee cup that had Cedric’s name on and he left it behind when he retired from VGH and my wife Karen brought it home. Although it’s difficult now to see beyond your loss and sorrow, May looking back in memory help comfort you in the days ahead. The world lost a good man.

  • Pamela Bates

My older brother Ced, dear pal and great friend. When kids in Peterborough he was ‘Roy Rogers’, I was ‘Dale Evans’, and he was the fastest cap-gun “6-shooter” on our street. He was a worker bee – shoveling snow, and assisting Dad to hose water on our backyard skating rink, in icy evening temperatures. We skated and tobogganed. We fought most days over who should wash and who should dry the dinner dishes (sorry Ced, I should have done both!) He was a Cub Scout – who I thought shone apples the best in competition, was keen to earn badges, and who was missed when he went camping. He accompanied me home in the winter’s dark from my piano lessons at school. A good artist and sketcher, he drew plans of log cabins, and wanted to build one for real.
All Ced’s life he worked hard. He loved and was proud of his family and provided well. After retirement he added our parents and sister to the equation, kindly giving them much of his time and driving them where they needed to go. We weren’t able to see each other often these past years, but Ced was always close in thought. With condolences on the passing of your Dad and Grandpa to Roy & Chin, Brent, Brian, and grandchildren Dena, Roan, Trevor (for whom there will be many photos to show and stories of his Grandpa to relate, also to his granddaughter due in January!) LOVE, Pam and Gord

  • Denise Armitage

Dear Roy and Chin, Brent, Brian, Dena, Roan and Trevor, I know how much you will miss your Dad and Grandpa, and want you to know I am here for you any time you need my help. My family and I are also sad that Dad left us so early, and we will miss him dearly. Love and hugs, Aunt Denise

Dear Ced, thanks for being such a good, kind little brother to me. Your visits and help was always appreciated. You are always in my thoughts. Love from your big Sis, Denise
