Danny, age 62, passed away peacefully at his home in Victoria, BC on Monday, March 12, 2018.  He was born in Hamilton, Ontario on November 19, 1955 to William and Irene (Mackay) Nichols and was the youngest of four brothers.

Danny will be missed by his daughter, Ashlea (Ian Stone) Wilson; granddaughter, Natalie; brothers, Bob (Kim), Ken (Julie) and Jan (Janet) Nichols and many nieces and nephews.

As a child, Digger Dan spent his days playing baseball and lacrosse, and he never missed an episode of The Three Stooges. Danny made Vancouver Island his home over 40 years ago. His career in Public Works with the City of Victoria began in 1982 and he retired in 2014. He was known around the job sites as Brother Radical. Danny loved baseball, watching the Cleveland Indians play at Jacobs Field, visiting Cooperstown and trips to Seattle with his daughter were some of his fondest memories. He was excited to watch his granddaughter’s future tee ball games. Not a day went by where Danny didn’t talk to his friends and family on the phone. Keeping in touch with loved ones was a top priority for him. Those calls will be greatly missed by everyone. Danny was loyal, honest and straightforward. His strong character and outgoing personality made him the subject of many stories. His absence will be felt by all who knew him.

“Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good too.”

As per Danny’s request, a service will not be held.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I just learned today that Dan is gone. Was wondering why I haven’t seen his vehicle at Tim Hortons lately. Dan was from my home town of Hamilton, Ontario and I will miss his curmudgeonly 24/7 humor. The planet just got even more lonely for me now that he is gone.

My condolences to the family and friends. I worked with Dan as a table officer on the CUPE 50 executive for all the years he was recording secretary and was one of the few who could read his calligraphic handwriting style readily for typing minutes. We both started with the City the same year and have had many great interactions dealing with union matters and outings. I always liked Brother Dan’s straight forward say it the way it is approach, to anyone.

Danny you were a person of great passion and I saw you impact so many peoples lives, including mine and Michael’s. The way you told the truth was unique and I often though of you as extremely intelligent and I know you didn’t want to hear that. You are missed Danny.

  • Wayne Martin

I didn’t know Dan for as long as many of this ball playing buddy’s. But I am very glad that I got the opportunity to play on the Tribe. Dan was always able to take a normal conversation or environment to another crazy level. Many laughs and great times playing ball and nights at the clubhouse. You will be missed my friend.

  • Dewane Ollech

Sorry for the loss too. Who thought that voice could be silenced. Loud and Proud. That was Dan.

  • Julie Nichols

Ken and I will miss you so much. We were reminiscing about the past years. Your favourite expression “don’t take this personal” will always remain in our hearts and minds. So much to remember. You were only 7 years old when I met you and I will never forget the laughs we had over the years. You left us too soon Love always, Ken and sister(in-law) Julie

  • Shandi Nicell (great niece)
