Goldie passed away peacefully in Victoria on August 17, 2016 at the age of 97. Born in Leroy, Saskatchewan on November 12, 1918. She was predeceased by her husband Francis, (Bubs) in 1981; her son, Pat in 1977 and her grandson, Geordie in 2013.

Goldie was the youngest daughter of Richard and Ethel Hannah (nee Franklin).  She spent most of her youth in Saskatchewan until the family moved to BC in the 30’s. Even though I only briefly met your mom a number of years ago, she was always a huge inspiration to me. She knew my mom for many years through their shared time of nursing at St. Joseph’s hospital and kept in touch through many reunion events. When I became ill in my teen years she would always keep current on the latest medical testing that I was going through and when they finally diagnosed my condition (the same adrenal problem she had) she was a great inspiration as she was someone that was living life to the fullest. I have not met too many that share our condition and I would always think of her and all that she accomplished and I would often think of her when I would look towards my future, knowing that if she could do it, so could I. My sympathy to you and your families-I hope you find comfort in all of the wonderful memories you have of your Mom. I will miss my mom coming home from each reunion event to let me know “Mrs. Carlow says hello and was asking how you were doing” Once a nurse, always a nurse.

I would like to offer my condolences to the Carlow family for the loss of Goldie Carlow. I was a nursing student at St. Joseph’s Hospital from 1965 to 1968, and Goldie was one of the Head Nurses I worked for back then! I have just read her obituary in the Victoria paper. I am amazed and inspired by her life long dedication to helping others!

It is with great sadness that I read of the passing of Goldie. She trained me to be a Senior Peer Counselor and for many years I volunteered with Senior Peer Counselling. My wife also met Goldie at many social functions.Unfortunately, we can’t attend Goldie’s Celebration of Life because we are away on holidays. However,we liked Goldie a lot. I learned many things from her and she had a good sense of humor. One time after a meeting she needed a ride home and I offered to take her; but I drive a big Dodge Truck. I was not sure if she could get in there, because the truck is very high. She managed and I told her that she was the oldest person that ever sat in the truck. Goldie left us with good memories. Not the least of whom was my Mom who because of your mom was able to have independence, security, a sense of self-worth and happiness near the end of her life. A gift treasured forever.
