Mrs. Helen Jean Batt (née Doblanko), of Victoria, British Columbia, passed away on Tuesday May 2, 2017 at the age of 94.

Helen was born to parents Andrew and Titania “Tina” Doblanko on November 19, 1922 in Leduc, Alberta. She grew up in the farming community west of Leduc as the third child of five. After leaving the farm as a young woman to work in Edmonton, she moved to Australia in 1954. While there, she married an Englishman, John Batt, in 1957. Their son, Alan, was born the following year. In 1965, Helen, with her family, returned to Edmonton. After living in Winnipeg, Montreal and Guelph, Helen and John moved to Victoria in 1992 for their retirement years.

Helen always had time for people, helping new immigrants and teaching English as a second language. She was actively engaged in learning and instructing Tai Chi, and had a life-long passion for words and word puzzles. Helen will be remembered fondly by the many people whose lives she touched.

Helen is survived by her husband, John; her son, Alan and his wife, Lan; granddaughter, Emma; and brothers, Mike and Harold. She is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Tina; her sister, Stella Woitas and brother, Tofen “Toby”.

A private cremation and scattering of the ashes occurred at Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria on May 9, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen’s memory to Victoria Hospice (www.victoriahospice.org).
