Helena Janeda was born one of seven children, in a tiny hamlet in central Poland. In September 2017, she passed away on the eve of her 94th birthday in Victoria, BC.

Helena survived many hardships and was grateful to immigrate after WWII to Canada.

Predeceased by her husband, Jan, in 2013, and left to commemorate her life of determination are daughters Irene (Jim), Anne, Lucia (Dennis), and Teresa (Mark); grandchildren Jayna, Julia, Eric, Adam and great-granddaughter, Arianna and numerous relatives in Poland.

Mom (Babcia) loved her family with a fierce pride, freely offering her wisdom of hard knocks experience tempered with lots of practical advice.

She enjoyed a home filled with friends and family. These were fun times that brought out Mom’s mischievous sense of humour. Food was integral – Mom’s potato pancakes, cabbage rolls, and perogies were legendary.

Seeing things grow made her happy. She had a green thumb up to her elbow and adored all flowers, especially red carnations.

Many trips to Beacon Hill Park combined her love of the outdoors with music. Here, she basked in the sun, listening to the Sunday afternoon concerts.

Helena and Jan were charter members of the Victoria Polish Association: they attended many events with their family and, in her later years, Helena enjoyed playing senior’s bingo at the White Eagle Hall.

Mom’s last few years were at Kiwanis Pavilion. The inordinate kindness of all the staff and particularly those on Unit 1C made Mom feel special and valued. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for keeping her safe and comfortable.  Many thanks, too, to Mary and Denise, her caregiver-companions.

Until we meet again, Mom, safe journey. Kohamy ciebie.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Oak Bay Pavilion Foundation, 3034 Cedar Hill Road, Victoria, BC, V8T 3J3

A Service and Reception will be held on Saturday, October 7th, 2017, at 2 pm in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC.
