Jong Hong Jew passed away at the age of 85 on January 30, 2018, in Vancouver, BC. Hong is survived by his loving wife, Mee Sheung Jew (May); his five children Juhli (Fred), Henry (Elly), Suzanne (Craig), John (Marlene) and Jason; as well as his six adoring grandchildren Alexander, Stephen, Derek, Aiden, Danielle, and Garret. He will be dearly missed by his sisters Gloria (Robert) and Jennifer (Whyte), his brother-in-law Haim (Foon Hop) as well as many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Born October 10, 1932, in Taishan, Guangdong, China, Hong immigrated to Canada in 1951.  He settled in Victoria and began work as a cook, beginning a career that would span 45 years. Hong worked for CP Rail, Government House, BC Ferries and rose to become a highly regarded chef of The Victoria Golf Club.

In 1960, Hong married Mee Sheung Lee (May, also from Taishan) in Victoria, where for 57 years, they lived a peaceful life. You couldn’t find Hong out of the kitchen for long, even at home, where he loved preparing meals for family and community gatherings, both large and small. He also loved tending to his bountiful garden, carefully mowing its expansive lawn.

Hong was a longtime member and Director of the Hoy Sun Association and actively continued in his volunteer duties until his passing. He will be remembered for his hard work ethic, selfless attitude, and dedication to his family and friends.

While his passing was sudden, he left peacefully with his wife and five children at his side.

An extra thank you goes to the caring nurses, doctors and ICU team of St Paul’s Hospital.

A Celebration of Hong’s Life will be held in The Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, British Columbia, on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at the Royal Oak Burial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hoy Sun Ning Yung Benevolent Association or the Lung Kong Association.
