Ian fought his illness with courage and fortitude but in his own way.  It did not prevent him from pursuing his deep interest in humanity and his concern for the environment.  He was never without his camera, recording life in all its forms, pictures that he hoped would illustrate his writings on the complexities and beauty that surround us.  Survived by his mother, Shirley and sister, Pamela. Predeceased by his father, David and brother, Murray.

    Dear Mrs Smirke
I met Ian when I was 18 and in Vancouver travelling. He was open, gentle and funny, with a real sense of how things could be better, and a willingness to try and make them so. He is responsible for some of my very best memories. I am so sorry to have lost touch with him, and I am so sorry for your loss.

    Dear Mrs. Smirke & Pamela,

My sincere condolences. I have many fond memories of Ian all throughout our days at Hollyburn Elementary & West Vancouver Secondary. Ian was my date to grad & I was thrilled when he pulled up to my parents house on Gordon Avenue in a convertible MG that he had borrowed from a family friend. I also have great memories of studying with Ian at the kitchen table of your family home on Leyland Street & also at West Van Memorial Library. The last time I saw Ian was at our 20 year high school reunion in 2002.
Ian was an artistic soul & will always hold a special place in my heart…
