Ina Beaveridge (nee Soesina Adriana Hensen) died March 1, 2017, of congestive heart failure at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC.  First of eight siblings born to Dirk Hensen and Margo Hensen (nee van Bergem) in Haarlem, The Netherlands, January 18, 1927.

Mother to Robin Kers, Hendrik and Dirk de Pagter, Grandmother to Djemira, Arielle and Elana de Pagter, Chantal (Chris)and Marie-France Kers (Ghislain), Great grandmother to Clara Paré. Survived by her brothers Dick ( Coos)  and Martin (Betty) and sisters Margo, José (Claude) and Bat Ami.

Ina’s character was in large part formed by the horrors she survived as a teenager in Holland during the Second World War and by her upbringing in a loving Socialist household in which her curiosity regarding matters spiritual were encouraged, by parents who believed their children should follow their own paths in life. She declared herself a Baha’i in March 1960. The Baha’i faith’s basic credo of the oneness of humanity and the necessity for world peace resounded deeply with her own beliefs. She imparted the principles of oneness, the equality of men and women, and social justice to her children and to all who would listen.

A talented flair for the dramatic ( she studied acting at the Montreal Repertory Theatre ), was always evident.  Known to embarrass her children by spontaneously dancing with abandon. She was a gifted communicator, vivacious, tenacious, captivating, at times infuriating, lively and entertaining, but most of all, loving. Her home was always open to people in need of a sympathetic ear, a bowl of soup or a sanctuary in which to escape their troubles. She was a lover of languages and the cultures and peoples of the world, an avid reader and orator. She entered into university in her fifties and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. Her love of people led her into Reiki which she taught and practiced late into her life. Now free from pain, we are sure her journey continues.

She will be sorely missed by her children, siblings, many nieces and nephews and the many people whose lives she touched and who loved her dearly.

Ina was one of a kind, and a kind person at that. Her kids are great people, so there you go. She left the world a better place all around. Ina, Presente!

When Ina visited my small apartment on Cook street in Oct 1983 for a Hallowe’en party it was our initial meeting. She was dressed up as a Hippie, very modern and cool. We spent many wonderful hours after that talking, drinking tea, and enjoying walks. Tot ziens lieve Ina, en goede reis. My heartfelt condolences to Ina’s loving family.
