Janet died peacefully on February 2, 2018 at Broadmead Lodge with beloved daughter Karen by her side. Born on August 2, 1933 in St. John’s Newfoundland, Janet moved to Toronto at the age of 17 to attend nursing school at Toronto General Hospital before joining the Canadian navy. While serving as a lieutenant in the navy, Janet met her husband, Todd, a member of the Royal Navy. Together they moved to the UK and had three beautiful children, Deborah, Robert, and Karen.

Returning to Canada in 1974, the family moved to BC and settled into civilian life. Janet returned to nursing, first at Ridge Meadows Hospital, and then at Naden Hospital at CFB Esquimalt; finally, finishing her career at William Head Institution. As a nurse, Janet was truly dedicated to her patients, displaying compassion and empathy, traits which crossed over to her personal life, where she was always willing to go out of her way to lend a hand to anyone in need. Janet was an active member of the Registered Nurses Association of BC and the Naval Officers’ Association of Canada – Vancouver Island. She also remained in contact with many of her nursing sisters from Toronto General Hospital and took great joy in attending reunions and monthly luncheons.  Upon retirement, Janet dedicated much time to one of her loves, geology and could often be found hiking in the woods in and around Sooke, searching for interesting rocks, and the occasional very small nugget of gold – and chasing off the odd bear. Janet was an avid gardener and kept a beautiful garden at her home in Fairfield for many years. Her love of her garden was only surpassed by her love of her family and cats.

Predeceased by her husband Todd, daughter Deborah and son Robert, Janet is survived by her loving daughter Karen, niece Kim and nephew Rod. She will be missed by many other relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at Broadmead Lodge, where Janet lived for the last year of her life, for the wonderful care they provided.

Janet remained joyful throughout her later years, sharing her infectious giggles and personality with family, friends, residents, and staff. She will be remembered with much joy by all who knew and loved her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Wardroom at CFB Esquimalt, 1586 Esquimalt Road on March 3rd at 1 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted by Broadmead Care, Victoria BC – www.broadmeadcare.com.
