With great sadness, we announce the passing of our eldest brother, Mark.  Mark died suddenly on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, aged 74.  He was born in Victoria on August 8, 1942, of the late Daniel Francis Paine and Edith Muriel Paine.  He is predeceased by his sister, Dana Gerela; his brothers, Michael and Daniel; his two sisters-in-law, Carroll Paine and Maureen Paine; his brother-in-law, Kent Neely of Calgary.  He is survived by his siblings, Mara, Sandra, Robert (Lynn), David (Diane), Nicola (Richard), Stephen, and Paul and many nieces and nephews.  In his later years, he resided in McBride, B.C. where he made and leaves many friends. Mark will be greatly missed by all of us.  He was baptized at Queen of Peace, and confirmed and received first Communion at St. Andrew’s Cathedral.

In Grade 6, Mark left school to work as a Telegraph Delivery Boy to help support his parents and younger siblings.  Later, he worked as a Labourer, Bricklayer’s Assistant and Bricklayer.  Among the buildings he helped to complete or restore are Christ Church Cathedral, Camosun College, Victoria High School, Craigdarroch Castle, in Victoria, and the Marine Building in Vancouver.  It was said that only Mark and his co-worker, Gail Ogilvie, were able to make peace with the nesting seagulls high up on the Marine Building.  A slow and methodical person, Mark always took pride in his work.  One of his enduring gifts is the massive three-story fireplace he built for the log house of his brother, Robert and his sister-in-law, Lynn.  He loved hunting, fishing and being in the wilderness.

A viewing and prayers will be offered at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, 2017.  A  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Queen of Peace Parish, 851 Old Esquimalt Road, at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2017, with Fr. Stephen Paine officiating. Burial will follow at Hatley Memorial Gardens, 2050 Sooke Road. A reception will follow the burial in the hall of Queen of Peace on Esquimalt Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Respect Life Ministries at St. Andrew’s Catholic Cathedral.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I was so sorry to read of Mark’s death in yesterday’s Times Colonist and would have been at the ceremony had i known. I was out of town until yesterday and did not realize he had died. As you may know, Sandy Ormiston, the father of my children, was buried just two weeks ago. He and Mark were close over the years, and whenever Mark would phone Sandy i would hear about the latest chat. I remember many years ago driving to Alberta with Mark and our entire family to a wedding of Ken, another employee of Sandy’s, and what a good time we all had. I do hope that they may meet in another life.
    Sincerely, Joan Ormiston
