With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to our beloved husband, father and brother, Vic Derman, who passed suddenly on March 17, 2017 at the age of 72.

Vic was a loving family man, a former junior and senior school teacher, a veteran Saanich Councillor and CRD Director, an avid cyclist and tireless community advocate who championed many causes relating to sustainability, climate change mitigation, smart growth, and livable, affordable communities.

Although Vic’s perspectives and interests were broad and global in nature, he was most loyal and proud of his Saanich birthplace and felt his political role afforded him the opportunity to connect with citizens’ needs and make his community “a better place”.

He is survived by his wife Lauraine, daughter Michelle, sister Sheila and brother-in-law Rick Weatherill, nieces Marika and Danielle Smith, and many other loving extended family members.

The family welcomes the public to a Celebration of Life to be held April 2, at 2:00 pm. at the Victoria Conference Center, 720 Douglas Street.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Vic’s preferred charities: The Land Conservancy of BC (feature project: Madrona Organic Farm), SPCA Wild ARC, or the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Vic Derman was a great supporter of Habitat for Humanity’s Flex Plex project on Bethune Street in 2007/8- it reflected his wishes for creating a diverse and caring community – condolences to Vic’s family and community.

To the Derman family I offer my sincerest condolences. My father was Joe Crosby or “Bud” as he was called, and operated the family grocery at Obed and Tillicum for many years. Leo and my dad were friends, and as a golfer I got to know Leo through his years as manager of the Gorge Vale Golf Club. My dad passed in 1975, but Leo shared several fond memories of their times together. I met Vic over the years on several occasions, and must say he had his dad’s twinkle in his eyes. As a long time Saanich resident myself, Vic’s reputation as a thoughtful and respectful municipal politician will be one of his many lasting legacies. He was dedicated to making Saanich and the Capital Region a better place. I hope his leadership by example inspires the next generation to become engaged in local government.

  • David Anderson

Vic’s passing is a great loss to our community. He was an outstanding member of the Saanich Council and the Capital Regional District, always concerned about the long term and always willing to look beyond the short term popularity of a particular issue. He was a committed environmentalist, who believed firmly in each one of us doing what we could to live our lives in a sustainable and responsible way.

Lauraine and Michelle have our deep sympathy for their sad loss.

    David, Sandra and Zoe Anderson.

We cannot express how saddened we were to hear of Vic’s passing. We have known Vic for many years through his community service. As a Councillor We found Vic to be approachable, and always willing to take the time and spend time in assisting members of his community. Whenever we would meet with him for coffee to discuss local issues Vic would always arrive with bike helmet in hand eager to talk. Vic was always willing to speak his mind at Council even when he was not in the majority. He always stood up for his beliefs and was duly respected by all. He will be greatly missed.

Please convey to the family of Vic Derman our sincere condolences. When Andria and I heard of Vic’s passing.
Vic was a former colleague of mine at Lansdowne and Spectrum Schools.

I was a student of Mr. Derman’s at Cedar Hill from 1992-95 in both his Social Studies and Multimedia classes. He was an exceptional teacher who held us all to very high standards of thinking and diligence in our work. He prepared us extremely well for high school, university, and beyond – perhaps more than any other teacher at the school. To this day I rely on things I learned from him. He will be missed by a generation of Victoria students.

  • David Gerrior

I was very sad to hear of Vic’s passing for whom I had a great deal of respect. He clearly loved representing Saanich and helped make it more livable and enjoyable for everyone. My most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

It was an honour to be a teaching colleague for over 20 years. Vic was also my son’s teacher for 3 years. A wonderful teacher, ahead of his time in recycling and caring for the environment, and dedicated to his students. He will be missed.

We met on the squash courts and Vic often had a tip to share on how to improve my play. The post-play conversation was always a great part of the game, and Vic was inquisitive, friendly, and fun partner. I think he stopped or reduced playing when he went on to do such great things in public service. He will be missed as an intelligent, thoughtful and kind contributor to the quality of our lives. My condolences to his family.

  • Valerie Green

My sincere condolences to Vic’s wife and family and all his Saanich colleagues. I knew him from many committees I served on at Saanich and always admired his work ethic and dedication to his community. He will be greatly missed by so many.

I was lucky to be a secondary school colleague of Vic in three different schools. He was a great teacher and a man of tremendous integrity. He went on to to even bigger things in public service. This is a great loss to all who knew him.
