Jim, a lifelong scouter, has completed his final journey to join his beloved wife of 71 years, Margaret. Predeceased by his sister Emma and brothers Dick, George and Roy, Jim leaves behind his sister Inez; brother Frank (Linda); sister-in-law Dorothy; sons Bill (Jo Ann), Ron (Kathy), Ken, Bruce (Patrice); 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Jim lived his entire life in Victoria except for his WWII service aboard HMCS Haida and had a long career in the postal service. Throughout his life, Jim was an active and dedicated member of Christ Church Cathedral, the Oddfellows Lodge, and an Honourary Lifetime Member of the Baden Powell Guild of Victoria, Jim had a passion for the outdoors, the more remote, the better. He worked endlessly in his garden, explored the wilderness of local parks, the Forbidden Plateau, Garibaldi Park, and the Rockies. This passion was only exceeded by his devotion to family, with a special interest in following the activities of the younger members. Over many years, Jim and Margaret also took great joy entertaining their many friends at home and at the family Deep Cove property.

Our family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at The Veterans Memoriai Lodge at Broadrnead for their exceptional care and kindness.

A celebration of Jim’s life will take place at Christ Church Cathedral at a date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

I’m saddened by the loss of my Uncle Jim. I give my sincere condolences to all of Jim’s family.

My fondest memory of him is when he took us hiking in Garabaldi Provincial Park in 1994. On this four day hiking trip, there was Jim, Bob (Jim’s friend), Roy (my dad), and myself.
To this day, the toughest hike I’ve ever done was the climb up Mt Price. Jim tied a rope to Roy to help Roy up the mountain. We spent all day hiking on a tough route (I wouldn’t call it a trail). No one else was on the route but us. The spectacular view at the summit is unforgettable! We were very happy, but I recall how especially happy Jim was.

I recall “Mr. Gower” as my scout leader in 1st Douglas troop. As I think back now, many of the values he instilled in us helped shape us for our future. I recall him as being very kind and amazingly patient as I’m sure we must have tried that patience many times. That was over 45 years ago. My condolences to the family.
