Alan James Hodgson, aged 89, passed away on June 19, 2018 after a brief stay in Victoria Hospice. Born in Victoria as the eldest son of Alan Charles Hodgson and Martha (Peggy) (nee Chadwick). Alan enjoyed a 54-year career as a productive architect, contributing significantly to the built, artistic and cultural fabric of Victoria, the city he cherished.
His work was his life. Some of his more innovative projects include an addition to the Technical College in Terrace, B.C., the University of Victoria’s Maclaurin Building, including its associated Music Building with the Philip T. Young Recital Hall, the MacPherson Playhouse restoration and new lobby, the earlier development of Island Farms, now under the aegis of Agropur, a Quebec based co-operative, and the restoration of the British Columbia Legislative Buildings.
Alan always appreciated the faith that his clients, contractors, and colleagues had for his design capabilities. A proud member of the Masonic community since 1955, he recently affiliated with Capilano Lodge No 164 in North Vancouver.
Alan will be lovingly remembered by Sheila, his wife of 66 years, his son Kevin (Janet), daughter Sarah (Jim), and his four grandchildren: Ian, Farleigh, Jessica, and David. He leaves his siblings Barbara (Bill) and David (Nancy), nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Deep appreciation is extended to Dr. Bryan Murray, to the doctors and staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital and to the team at Victoria Hospice for their kindness to Alan and his family.
Alan was given a green burial on June 26, 2018. A Celebration of Life to follow.

Marilyn My first job was in an Esquimalt dentist’s office beside Alan’s first office space and I believe he was just starting out; it was a time of great change and design in 1966. UVIC being built, Centennial Square…modernism. I loved to see the latest sketches, plans and maquettes he displayed because they were so non conforming, so airy and non traditional. Over the years I’ve always been aware of and admired the work of Alan Hodgson, in my mind one of the trail blazers in mid century architecture here, and I’ll always remember the lights that burned late in that tiny office, and where they led. Sincere condolences to his family.

My dearest Sheila,
I have just read of dear Alan’s passing. My most sincere condolences to you and the family.
I must confess that I always thought that AJH would outlive us all, as he always seemed to be the spryest soul in the room. I will always treasure Alan’s patient mentorship and gentlemanly professionalism….to say nothing of his effortless talent.
I shall miss him, and I will never forget him.

Dear Sheila,
Having moved from Victoria to Portland some time ago, I am just now reading of Alan’s death. He was a most splendid and creative designer for the VILLA MARCO POLO INN, transforming a 3rd floor attic in disrepair into a stunning Penthouse Spa. Especially for a worldly being of such accomplishments, he was a mild-mannered gentleman, without pretension or artifice. Bless his heart.
