Anna (Anni) Katharina Romig (nee Hubmann)

The ever kind and sweet Anna (Anni) Katharina Romig (nee Hubmann) passed suddenly on March 20, 2025, at the “good” age of 87. Anni was predeceased by her devoted husband Peter (2014) and survived by her children Peter (Chantal), Sylvia (Kevin), Steve (Teresa) and Carol (Don). She was a loving grandmother to Samantha (Kevin), Gaby (Gavin), Victor, Ryan and Ethan. She was thrilled to become a great grandmother when little Sean was born.

Born in Lauterhofen, Germany November 21, 1937, Anni was the youngest and last surviving of her much loved six siblings. She reminisced fondly of her warm and bucolic childhood despite the sadness of the war and early loss of her two very young brothers. She is cherished by her many surviving nieces and nephews in Germany. She is also survived by many of Peter’s family, some of whom remained in Europe and others who took the same brave move of immigrating to North America in the late 1950s/early 60s.

Always tidy, organized and caring, Anni enjoyed working as a housekeeper and companion in Montreal, QC. She and Peter made many dear friends. They loved to dance and were members of several social clubs. They worked as a team to build a small log cabin in rural Quebec, and renovated homes in Florida and Ottawa before moving to BC in their 50s, joining their two daughters. They were young, active and involved grandparents. In their retirement, they traveled to every part of the world, anxious to explore and experience different cultures and histories. Anni joined a choir with ladies from the German club and she and Peter continued their dance club activities. Close friends often joined them for an evening of dinner and cards followed by a chorus of songs sung to Peter’s harmonica.

Anni also enjoyed her quiet time and personal pursuits. She was very creative, designing patterns and making clothing for family (even our dolls had custom outfits). As a child of war, she was frugal, careful not to waste, cleverly finding a use for everything. She loved to garden, bake and cook and took advantage of the climate to grow vegetables to harvest year long. With more time available, she found a strong love of painting and always had a book on the go. She started her day with long walks in the neighbourhood hilltop Garry Oak meadow in Summit Park.

Anni was diagnosed with mixed dementia years ago, and although she was no longer able to walk, and didn’t know what day it was, she continued to entertain with her quick wit and sense of humour. As her physical health deteriorated, Anni spent her last year in a nursing home. She brought her fun spirit and amusing presence when participating in activities (she was a staff favourite, not surprisingly), but she was also content to nap as often as her big heart desired.

Anni saw the beauty and good in the smallest of things and had an innate, strong sense of social justice.

She blessed us with her purest love. She was, and will continue to be an angel in our lives.

In lieu of flowers, Anni would want you to hold your loved ones close. She will be missed more than words can say.
