Barbara passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, on October 17th, 2021.  She was born in Winnipeg on December 17, 1948.  Barbara was predeceased by her first husband, Kent McDougall.  She is survived by her loving husband Doug, her daughter Heather Nicol; her son Brad McDougall; step-son David Renton (Jennifer); her step-daughter Heather Sutherland (Scott); and her much-loved grandchildren Sam, Emma, Liam, Max, Lexi and Jaxon; and her brother George Johnson.

Barbara grew up in Winnipeg and settled in Calgary in 1972. An accomplished businesswoman, she worked at Smed Manufacturing for 10 years before joining Doug as a partner and employee of KLS Earthworks. Barbara was very active in the Alberta construction industry, and served on the Board of Directors for both Merit Contractors Association and the Alberta Construction Safety Association.

Barbara was an intelligent, passionate, often opinionated, caring and generous woman who had a lasting effect on the lives of family and friends. She had a clever and wicked sense of humour often using quotes from “Mrs. Brown’s Boys” or Robin Williams.  Her strong spirit, incredible strength and goodness will be with us in our hearts forever.

There is no service, by request.  A very special thanks to the Doctors, Nurses, and staff at the Victoria Hospice (RJH).  If desired tributes may be made to:

    Hello Doug.
I was saddened to learn of Barbara’s passing. Although many years have passed since we last saw each other, the thoughts of Barb, you, & KLS are easily retrieved. In fact, it was only six weeks ago that I was sorting through my “special memories” box, and Barbara’s kind notes to me are still in there. I was so impressed by this lady – not only for her ability to work in a husband/wife partnership, but to do so within a man’s dirt digging and heavy equipment industry. She was firm and fair in negotiations and I was so grateful and proud to be a small (tiny) part of your success.
Please accept my sincere condolences Doug
    Warmest regards

  • Victor John La Breche and Avril

To my dear sweet cousin, a lady who took me to her heart when I came to Canada looking for my father, after the break up of a WWII marriage. As a direct result of her, and Doug’s countless endeavors over those years, I now have a Canadian family and Canadian citizenship. As I live in England, I carry a heavy burden of not being able to say goodbye and telling her just how grateful I am and how much I loved her. I just hope I was able to convey those feelings in the countless visits we made over there and when they came to us. There aren’t many folk who get to meet a real Guardian Angel in this life, but I really was the lucky one.
Our love and condolences to all of my family in Canada and may you find the strength to rebuild your lives once again. See you soon.

    Vic & Avril xx

Doug, our deepest condolences. You and Barb had an incredible marriage and friendship that raised the bar for the
rest of us. Loyalty and love and integrity and commitment to family needs to be celebrated. Barb was a strong, powerful
fun loving, determined woman who leaves a legacy of never wavering from her principled values.
We will never forget our last evening all together when Barb was the life of the party and had us all laughing .
She was one of a kind and left the world a better place.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.
