Bernhard “Bernie” Ortlieb, devoted husband and loving father, died peacefully at the age of 87 early Christmas morning, 2017 at his home in Victoria, BC.
Born on December 30th, 1929 in Münstertal, Germany to Ottilie (Steiert) and Karl August Ortlieb. Bernie was one of 6 children. He came to Canada in 1954 where he met, married and started a family with Russian immigrant, Anna Fedorovna Erochina. As the owner/operator of a successful bakery outside of Vancouver BC, Bernie worked hard to provide for his family. He loved life to the fullest, enjoying gardening, travelling, music, and writing. He was a devout Catholic and sang in the church choir with his wife for many years. He was also an active member of the Kolping Society of Vancouver, the Knights of Columbus, and his community, making generous charitable donations and dedicating countless volunteer hours over his lifetime to help those in need. Bernie had a special knack for making people laugh. His gentle nature and kind-hearted humour warmed the hearts of everyone he met.
Predeceased by parents as well as siblings, Elisabeth, Franz, and Trudpert, and nephew, Karl-Josef. Bernie will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Anna; three daughters, Mary Ann, Lillian (Bruce) and Paulina; siblings, Walburga and Hugo; grandchildren Jessica, Tanya, Luke, Ruby, Audrey and Violet; great-granddaughter, Athena, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held on January 10th, 2018 at 11 am at Our Lady of Assumption, 7742 West Saanich Road, Central Saanich, BC V8M 1R7

John Fengler Bernhard, my first friend in Vancouver,1956. The year of the start of the Vancouver Kolpings Family, of which he also was a founding member. We became friends the first time we met. He was also kind enough to visit my mother on his first return to Germany. We lost contact when I went into the Yukon and he was busy in his Bakery in Coquitlam. But we have seen each other the last time at the 50th Anniversary of the Kolpings Family Vancouver. He did contribute a great deal to lasting friendships in his life time. Rest in Peace, my friend.

Bernhardt was a true and passionate Badener, a Schwarzwaelder who never forgot his roots and the special family he was born into. I, as a former Nord-Schwarzwaelder and he from the south, we often talked about the unique part of Germany we came from. In our younger years we had dreams of forming a Schwarzwald Club in Vancouver. The times we had together with his family was in Ladner,
in Kelowna in our hica greenhouses, a Hello at the Bakery or
the vine yard, a chad about his beloved Muenstertal, and the
happy hours at our Kelowna Kolping Group.
