Brian died peacefully in hospital on December 7, 2022. He was predeceased by his dad, Ron; survived by his mom, Audrey, and siblings, Lorraine (Ernie), Marilyn (Ross), Eleanor and Allan (Mafalda) and many nieces and nephews.

In his younger days Brian was an accomplished lyric baritone. He won the prestigious Rose Bowl for classical voice and attended the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto followed by several years living in Vancouver, BC. He was a sought-after soloist and important member of many choirs. On his return to Victoria, BC, he was a driving instructor with Young Drivers of Canada where he received the Outstanding Instructor Award in 2000. Eventually he chose to live a quieter life focusing on cooking and crafts and ultimately became a bit of recluse.

No service.

Hello Benn family. Condolences on the passing of your Brian. No doubt he knew my brother, Michael Eckford, another wonderful Victoria Baritone, born 1952 and passed May 1, 2022. Such wonderful memories of their amazing voices eh. Michael too was reclusive … mostly at home with nature. Singing together with the angels now. Take care. Heather Hunter

We are all sad to hear of Brian’s passing. He worked with us for many years as one of the truly best driving instructors. We enjoyed his humour and smiling face. Condolences to you from us all at DriveWise Driving School (Formerly Young Drivers of Canada). Arthur and Patricia Harris

I’m so sorry to hear of Brian’s passing. It was such a joy and privilege to hear his voice in the Claremont Choir, in which I was accompanist along with Lorna Paterson. The rendition of ‘The Grasshopper’ in which Brian was one of the featured soloists brings back fond memories of our trips to San Francisco and England. Lorraine, these memories will be dear to your heart as well, I’m sure. I extend my sincere sympathy and condolences to the family; my thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

To all the Benn family…Brian was a treasured friend during our years together at North Saanich, Claremont, and UVic. We laughed, played and especially, sang together for many years. His irreverent and sometimes downright wicked sense of humour got us through many a performance, among other things. Singing with Brian was a joy, he was the best of us. He’s often been in my thoughts over the years, and I will remember him with great fondness. My condolences to all of you on the loss of such a special son and brother.
