Carl Anderson Shore

Carl Anderson Shore passed away on July 16, 2019 in Victoria, BC after a fall and a brief hospital stay.

Carl was born in Welland, Ontario on June 21, 1929 and grew up in Port Colborne, the only son and one of four children of Carl and Nellie Shore.  With a large extended family on both sides of the family, Carl grew up during the Great Depression, but remembered his childhood as a wonderful time of family, paper routes, fun, games, and much laughter.

Although quite sick as a child, Carl grew strong and became a champion athlete at Port Colborne High School, where he graduated in 1947.  He was the first in his family to attend University, attending McMaster University and graduating in 1950.  Carl then joined Clarkson Gordon, becoming a Chartered Accountant in 1954.  After doing some work as an auditor, Carl joined Upper Lakes Shipping as the Secretary and Treasurer of Port Weller Dry Docks in St. Catharines.

It was in St. Catharines – at the Ridley College Skating Club – that Carl met the woman of his dreams, Irene.  Wed in late 1958, Carl and Irene were married 57 years and raised Christopher, Andrea, and Jennifer.  The Shores were active community and Queen Street Baptist church members. Carl was a faithful member of the church choir, and was church treasurer and/or auditor for many years.  Carl was also an avid golfer and member of the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club.  He also enjoyed skiing and fishing.  He was a member of the St. Catharines Club and the Marine Club.

For many years, Carl was the risk manager for Upper Lakes Shipping, which meant he was involved in many insurance matters.  That meant trips to London to meet brokers at Lloyds of London, plus regular trips to Bermuda for managing a self-insurance company.  Carl was involved in consolidating the shipbuilding operations of a number of companies, and so changed corporate roles.

Carl and Irene moved to Toronto in 1986 for Carl’s new role and were active members of Yorkminster Park Baptist Church. Grandchildren began arriving while they were living in Toronto, and they became another of the great joys of his life.

Carl and Irene retired to Victoria in 1994, where golf, church, grandchildren, and gracious hosting filled their time and energy.  Once again, Carl helped First Baptist Church with various aspects of financial management for a number of years.

After Irene succumbed to cancer, Carl relocated from the condo on the Inner Harbour to the Cridge Centre for the Family where he lived nearly three years. The family is grateful for the care he received here, both from Cridge and Beacon Community Services staff.  Carl enjoyed the Cridge, regularly praising both the care he received and the food.  “The food here is really good!”

Just a few weeks prior to his passing, Carl celebrated his 90^th birthday with his children and most of the grandchildren.  It was truly a blessed time together.

Carl was predeceased by Irene, by his parents Carl and Nellie Shore, and by his sisters Patricia, Donna, and June.  He is survived by Christopher and Susan, Andrea and Brendan, and Jennifer and Scott. He will be greatly missed by the grandchildren he loved deeply – Andrew, Katrina, Michele, Sam, Louisa, and Cameron – as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
