Our Mother passed away in peace surrounded by her three sons – Robert, Tony and Jonathan, and her two daughters-in-law – Susan and Laura. She is also survived by her five grandchildren – Andrew, Allen, Nathan, Carl and Shannon, and nine great-grandchildren.

Doreen Fowler was born and raised in Northants, England and at the beginning of WW2 became a nurse in the Army where she served until the end of the war. In 1944, she married Douglas Gage. The family emigrated to Canada in January 1958 and moved into their home directly across from the Uplands Golf Course clubhouse, where they were active members for many years.

Douglas died in 1973 and after a few years, Doreen began travelling extensively through Europe and western North America with friends and family. She was an active member of St. Philip Anglican Church, singing in the choir and enjoyed an active life of golfing, bridge and being Nana to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In her last few years, she enjoyed living in Carlton House, where she made many friends. The family would like to thank both the staff at the Carlton House and the doctors, nurses and staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for their dedication and care.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Philip Anglican Church in Oak Bay on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 2:00 pm and a Celebration of Life will take place at the Uplands Golf Course for family and friends on Saturday, May 11th, 2019  from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, you may wish to donate to the charity of your choice.

Our heartfelt wishes for retaining happy memories of your mom, Tony. You and your family have such a proud legacy of community leadership and support, rising to the challenge that Henry David Thoreau stated: “One is not born into the world to do everything, but to do something.” Take care and see you in May at the celebration of a life well lived. Doreen was a dear friend of my mother in her latter years. She was one of only 2 people my mother wanted at her 90th birthday lunch. My mother died in 2012 at 91 years old.
I had been honoured to golf with my mum and Doreen a rew times at Uplands. Doreen was so sweet. If I did not get my clubs moved to the best spot she’d pull them up for me. Also, we all had golf balls marked with different silly marks. One was polka dotted and we chuckled as Doreen called it ‘spotted dick’.
My mother lived at Carlton House, but had passed away before Doreen moved in.
    Lovely, memories!

Our regrets to hear of Doreen’s passing. Doreen was a good friend in Carlton House. Our thoughts are very much with you all.

Dear Tony and Laura; It was a shock to read that Doreen had passed away. She was such a great spirit, here at Carlton House, where I first got to know her at the exercise classes that she attended dutifully and regularly. I had not met her before, but she knew that we were friends, and I valued the straight forward chats that occurred almost daily. A very fine lady! With deepest sympathy to you and your family. John Walton
