Douglas Grant Sherlock, Commander RCN CD, age 84, died on January 28, 2013 of Alzheimer’s Disease. He attended University Hill School and then UBC, graduating in Arts and Law. In 1965, he received an Academic Postgraduate Diploma in Law from Kings College, London University. His dissertation on the Doctrine of Hot Pursuit is still pertinent today. After being admitted to the Bar, he joined the RCN as a Lieutenant and became a member of the Judge Advocate General’s Branch. He served with distinction in Korea, Tokyo, Cairo, London, Bonn, Lahr, Oakville, Halifax, Victoria as well as four postings in Ottawa. After his retirement in 1979, he utilized his carpentry skills not only at home but by building his motorsailer Camas on which he spent many happy days sailing the Gulf Islands waters. He was a member of the NOAC and the Brentwood Bay Power Squadron and volunteered as a driver for the Cancer Clinic. He was very proud of his UEL roots and of being a second generation Vancouver-born. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Gethen; his son, Stephen and his sister, Della (Payne) and is survived by his wife, Leona; his son, Christopher and grandchildren, Robin, Kayde, Aja and Simon as well as nieces and nephews.
A Service of Remembrance will take place on at 2:00 pm on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at St. Mary’s Church in Oak Bay, 1701 Elgin Street, followed by a reception. The family wish to thank the caring staff at Central Care home where he spent 2 ½ years and The Lodge at Broadmead, where he spent more than 4 years, for making his last years as pleasant as possible. I was so sad when Mom told me of the news of Uncle Doug’s passing. I know he had a struggle in his latest years, but the life he led prior to his illness was majestic and what a true honour to share it with you.
As my god parents you both were always there for me; sharing in the big moments in my little life, especially at the big Debutante Ball! Oh my…such a grand affair, and Uncle Doug decorated in his uniform, such a handsome lad was he!!
I just wanted to thank you for all those memories, for all the times of unconditional love and support that you sent my way as I grew up. Its people like you and Uncle Doug that are part of the “village that raises a child” and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
May Uncle Dougs life will always be remebered with love and peace, and everytime I am looking out on the ocean, I will whisper a little memory to the salty air.

Jeff and Murrell Fitch Dear Leona. We are very sad to hear about Douglas. Murrell and I often reminice about your visit to the farm and have a good laugh about the unforgettable barbeque. Having read his obituary I feel I have missed out by not knowing Douglas as well as I should have. He certainly achieved a great deal in his life time. I was very sorry to hear of Doug’s passing and my condolences go out to you and your family. I had heard some time ago that Doug was ill and I am sure that the intervening period has not been easy for you or your family.
I worked for Doug in 1975 when I first became part of the Judge Advocate General’s Branch. Doug excelled at bringing people together, who had formed intractable positions on various issues, through compromise. I also knew him to be a wonderful raconteur and I enjoyed his many amusing stories of incidents that occurred in the course of his career. I wish you and your family all the best in dealing with this very sad event.
