Surrounded by her loving sons, Erna Hodgson passed away at Victoria General Hospital on July 13, 2021 at the age of 89. Erna is survived by her brother, two sons, her daughter-in-law, her son-in-law, five grandchildren, and numerous loving nieces and nephews around the world. Erna was a loving, compassionate woman with many friends and relatives who will miss her joy of life. She came to Canada from Denmark in the late 50s and met and married her first husband. They were happily married for 20 years before his untimely passing. Erna was fortunate to marry another loving man and enjoyed 33 years of marriage with him before he passed.

Family and friends were always her joy whether for a quick visit or an extended vacation. She enjoyed a quiet day teaching her granddaughter to knit as much as a day organizing and hosting a dinner party for 50 people. She had a special love of bridge and was a long-time organizer for the Engineer’s wives bridge club in Victoria. The symphony was another favourite, especially going with her best friend and the wonderful couple they met through 55+.

We would like to thank the many friends who have been so supportive and kind to Erna especially over the very difficult past 18 months. Her friends at Berwick did so much to support her during the lonely periods of COVID isolation. Thanks also to the caring staff at Berwick who were helping her over the past 2 years. Erna will be honoured in a private family Memorial service. In lieu of flowers donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Dear Steven, Peter & family: We are so sorry to hear of dear Erna’s passing. We were neighbors across the street from Erna & Fred for several years. We visited her after she moved, then also in Berwick House. She was a wonderful person, such a dignified lady, we will never forget her. She gave us a lovely Christmas ornament from Denmark one year, which means even more to us now. We have some lovely pictures of Erna from our son’s wedding, if you would like to see them, let me know where to email them to. So sorry for your loss.

My dear and very loved aunt Erna passed away and I’m so sad. I met faster Erna ( auntie Erna) in 1978 for the first time I Denmark. She was lots of fun and a real lady – I was 8 years old and very impressed. My family and I went to Canada on vacation in 1984 and Faster and uncle Fred showed us a great part of western Canada. We still talk about that very special vacation and how we all enjoyed it.
In 1987 I stayed at Faster and uncle Fred’s place for whole year – a year I always will remember – they were like an extra pair of parents and I’m so grateful for everything they did. Faster was a great person and I loved her very much. So did my family and we will miss her a lot.
All my love to Steven and Peter and the rest of the family.

My favourite auntie (faster in Danish) passed away. I’m so sad about that, but I keep on thinking of how lucky I am to have had her as my auntie eventhough she lived 1000 of miles away from Denmark. As a little in the 80’s I remember picking her up in the airport I DK. Always exicted to see her again. That excitement last forever- we loved her visits in Dk. Visited her and Uncle Fred in 1984, 1991 and 1994.
Faster and uncle Fred showed me all worth seeing sights in Western Canada. They were as a second pair of parents.
Faster and Fred attended our wedding , our daughters baptism and tried to come to Denmark as often as possible.
Luckily my sister and I went to Las Vegas in 2016 to celebrate Faster’s 85th birthday. We had a week of Fun and I’m so happy we all got together at that time.
Faster was a wise lady – she still spoke Danish fluently (you were not able to hear she lived abroad for 60 years), wise on life and what life had given her. She meant so much to me and my family. I lost my Faster and my kids lost their “FasterBedste” (auntie-grandma). We are glad that she was a part of our lives and she will stay in our minds forever.
    RIP
