HOSTY – (Brigadier) Freda Elizabeth. Born December 20, 1913 in Beckenham, Kent. Promoted to Glory February 8, 2003 in Victoria. She leaves behind her to celebrate her life her husband, Brigadier William Hosty, daughters Pauline (Rudi), Joan and Carol, grandchildren Russel, Dawne, Philip and Heidi, four great-grandchildren and so many whose lives she touched in her simple way. Freda was commissioned a Salvation Army officer in 1939, married Bill in 1942 and moved with the family to Canada in 1954. They held various appointments with the Salvation Army in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Victoria. Their final appointment was as administrators of the Salvation Army Matson Lodge before retiring in 1982. A minister in her own right, a talented poet and a gifted speaker, Freda devoted her life to the care of others, especially the sick and the elderly.

Active in the Council of Women and the Women’s Canadian Club, she was also League of Mercy Secretary for Northern Alberta. Her sense of humour, her love of nature, especially the ocean and her garden, her devotion to her family and her unerring ability to minister to those with whom she came in contact will be sorely missed. She was a real lady and a saint of God. Special thanks to Dr. Wolovitz and the nursing staff of 6C at Vic. General for their compassion.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Salvation Army Victoria Citadel, 4030 Douglas Street (off Mackenzie) on Thursday, February 13 at 3:00 p.m. A visit to Zimbabwe left Freda with a deep concern for the needs of the people there, therefore in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Athol Evans Hospital, Harare, Zimbabwe c/o The Salvation Army, Finance Department, 2 Overlea Blvd, Toronto ON M4H.
