George, also affectionately called “Uncle George” by so many, passed away peacefully at home on May 9, 2018.  He was predeceased by his loving wife Marianne in 1984 and survived by his daughter, Patty (Tim); grandsons, Kenneth and James; great-grandson Leo and numerous nieces, nephews and special friends here in Canada, Ireland and England.

George was born in Belfast, N. Ireland to George and Alice Glover, the 5th of six children in the family.  He had vivid memories of growing up with little but saying they were some of the best times of his life.  George developed his love of cycling as a young boy and had many adventures with his friends exploring all over Ireland.  After completing his apprenticeship at Harland and Wolff Shipyard, he worked at various places in England after the war, and then came to Canada in search of adventure and a better life. He worked his way across the country to Victoria in 1952, where he felt that he had found “a little bit of heaven” and the place he wanted to stay. He was employed at Yarrows for many years until retirement.

George and Marianne loved to travel, going on cruises and traveling to destinations including China, Japan, Africa and throughout Europe.   Special trips included visiting family and friends.  They also enjoyed many years of square dancing with the Frontier Twirlers, dining in fine restaurants and the theatre and simple times together outdoors, camping and taking long walks.  It has been said that George wasn’t the life of the party, but he was the party, with his youthful fun-loving approach to life, unending smiles and always a “song in his heart” to share.

After retirement, George spent many years helping neighbours, friends, and volunteering, including at the Red Cross and with Meals on Wheels for over 20 years.  He also kept active with cycling, swimming, gardening and travel.

In keeping with George’s wishes, there will be no service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

I worked with George for many years at Yarrows – starting out as an apprentice shipwright, George was a tremendous help. He was a kind generous man whose impact was felt by many. My sincere sympathy to all his family.

We love you so much Uncle George. We’re absolutely shattered knowing you’re no longer with us. – thank you for the best memories of my childhood. Dancing in the rain, watching Harvey (a rabbit) race through your yard… So many memories that I can’t wait to tell my kids about as they grow!

Say hi to Nani up there for me.❤

  • Gail Meyer

Sylvia and I have known George all our lives and our family was part of the camping and square dancing fun. What I enjoyed about George was his “Irish Wit” and his “Mad Tango Dancing.”

    Love Gail
