On May 21, 2018, Gerald Moorhouse Walls, husband of the late Lily Maunder and father of Rev. Donald Walls, died after a short decline at Berwick House.  Born on the family farm near Aneroid, Saskatchewan on October 27, 1920, the younger son of Fletcher and Mary Walls, he grew up with a great love for horses.  In October 1941, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force and began training.  On May 30, 1942, he married Lily Maunder in her family home in Vanguard, Saskatchewan.  He went overseas in October that year following training as a navigator.  During his wartime service, he belonged first to 427 squadron and later 433 squadron.  He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his part in bombing operations and later instructed new recruits.  After his return in May 1945, he registered at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon where his wife and he lived for the next three years.  Upon graduating with his B. Comm. Degree, he was hired by the Department of National Revenue, Taxation and they moved to Ottawa.  In 1956, he was transferred to Victoria where his family had six happy years before he returned to work in Ottawa.  He took early retirement in 1977 and in August 1978, his wife and he returned to live in Victoria.  They had a happy and active retirement.  Gerry was past president of Ottawa’s Granite Curling Club, the Victoria Curling Club and the 800 Pacific Wing RCAF club.  He was also a past member of the Victoria Golf Club, the Fourandex Officers Association, the Air Crew Association and the Air Force Officers Association.  He was a loving husband, father and a friend to many.  His generous spirit shed light in many lives.  His wife Lily and he were active in the community, welcoming hosts to family and friends, and good neighbours.  Gerry will be remembered for his down-to-earth perspective, wit and dry humour.  In later years, limited by health, he endured but was ready to leave this life.  It is with thanks for a life well lived and a release from this life to the next that his son and loved ones honour him.

He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years Lily, his parents, an infant daughter, his brother Kelso and nephew David Walls.  He is survived by his son Donald, nephews Bob, Elwood and Tom and families, and cousins in Canada and Washington state.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at St. Aidan’s United Church, 3703 St. Aidan’s St.  Officiating will be long-time family friend Rev. Wendy Brown.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the CNIB care of the CNIB Victoria service centre, 2340 Richmond Rd., Victoria, B.C., V8R 4R9.

Thinking of you today, Don, and of your father. We were fortunate to have our parents
for as many good years as we did. And now they are at rest—a well-deserved rest after a life well-lived.

    Dorothy.

In looking at today’s newspaper I saw Mr. Walls’ picture. What caught my attention was the granite curling club uniform he was wearing. My father had the same outfit. Your Dad and my Dad were very good friends. They both served as president of the curling club. They also played together in a lot of bonspiels in Ottawa and surrounding clubs. My dad passed away about 8 years ago. Old friends now reunited in the game they loved.
