It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Joe Ritrovato. Joe leaves to mourn his wife of 52 years, Antonietta Ritrovato (nee Romeo); sisters Lucia (Joe) Cuna of Victoria and Grazia Ritrovato of San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended relatives. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Giacinta Savino and Luigi Ritrovato; sister Antonietta and brothers Matteo (surviving wife, Filomena), Salvatore (surviving wife Maria) and Tobio. On his wife’s side, Joe is survived by his brother-in-law August Romeo (Caterina), sisters-in law Maria Falvo, Concettina Cisotto (Mario) and Rina Romeo.
Joe was born in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy where he learned and mastered the trade of brick layer. He brought his trade to Canada, emigrating from Italy in 1963 with his parents and sisters Lucia and Grazia. After a short stay in Winnipeg they returned to Italy, but Joe and Lucy ventured back to Winnipeg where Joe eventually et and married Antonietta in 1970. By 1977 they had enough of Winnipeg’s weather and moved to Victoria where they had honeymooned and enjoyed the milder weather.
Joe was an ambitious and hard worker; working 13 years for the City of Victoria, where he made many friends. At home, Joe was an avid gardener and wine maker. He also loved listening to music and dancing whenever the opportunity arose. He never missed a broadcast of the Italian Program on CFUV every Sunday.
A Celebration of Joe’s life was held on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 2:00pm in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. Please join us. If friends and family so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s memory can be made to a foundation of your choice. The family wants to give thanks to the home care nurses and also to the fine care he received at the ER and Jubilee Hospital.
