Born on a beautiful summer’s day in Edmonton, Alberta on August 9th, 1952, Gloria Darlene Tirling (née Ough) entered this world with a warm heart that continued to radiate kindness and sincerity throughout her 67 years. Gone far too soon, Gloria passed peacefully with her two daughters, Shannon (Steve and grandchildren, Sebastian and Silas) and Chelsea (James and grandchild, Gavin) by her side on July 30th, 2020. Gloria faced cancer head-on, as she did all challenges — head held high and determined, without the slightest of complaints.

Gloria is predeceased by her mother, Alice Louise Ough (née Smith), father, Vine (Vic) Merritt Ough, and brother, Wesley. Her and her mom had a special bond and were the best of friends, both living life with lightness and spunk. Gloria began working in her hometown of Edmonton from an early age, first at Safeway, then as a secretary for the School Board. After she married, Gloria moved to her beloved Victoria, BC, where she continued to flourish as a secretary with the Law Courts, the Department of Agriculture, and finally bookkeeper for the family business. She juggled her career and her role as a devoted mother seamlessly. Her daughters will be eternally grateful for the vibrant childhood and selfless support she has provided for them, always.

Some of Gloria’s favourite memories took place after her parents and siblings followed her to Victoria with their families. The decades of memories at the cabin on Forbidden Plateau, summers on the beach in Parksville, and the countless mother/daughter trips with her “girls” filled Gloria’s heart. She provided unwavering support for those closest to her, and we will forever be in awe of her unrelenting strength. She is adored by so many, including her dear sister, Carol, Sue, Geoffrey, Dean, Charlene, Leslie, Kathy, Hannah and Nic to name a few. Gloria’s organizational skills would put Marie Kondo to shame. She had an uncanny ability to keep her house meticulous but always homey. She loved the deer in her yard, reading the morning paper with her McBeans cup in hand, and making Christmas magical. She was the perfect gift-giver, and by saving all of her wall calendars since the ‘70s, was the consummate family historian.

Perhaps beyond all else, Gloria adored her three young grandsons, Gavin, Sebastian, and Silas (ages 3, 2 and 1). Her house was filled with toys, stickers, crayons, and books, and lovingly decorated with toddler artwork made special for “Nanny.” She proudly displayed photos, cards, and tiny baby footprints for all to see. Gloria had all the patience in the world and treasured playing with the boys in the park or in her yard, watching videos with them on her computer, and refilling their measuring cups with never-ending Cheerios. Nanny’s house was the best.

Today, August 9th, 2020 would have been the 68th birthday for our cherished Mom, Nanny, Aunty G and Sis. We will hold you in our hearts, always. No regrets. Through thick and thin and everything in between, love never fails. Love you, forever, Mom. xoxo

A private Celebration of Life will be held on a date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victoria Women In Need Community Cooperative, at https://www.womeninneed.ca/donate.

We were very sorry to read of Gloria’s passing. Gloria and parents used to visit Aunt Alice Brown in Armstrong when the family lived in Edmonton. I am Alice’s daughter Shirley and Gloria and I tried to keep in contact -Christmas letters etc. or if we were visiting our kids in Victoria would have a coffee or lunch. I had phoned several times with no answer then had seen Gloria’s obit. We have always enjoyed Gloria’s company. Her positivity, her love for her family, her grandchildren. Our sympathy to you all.
