With great sadness, our family announces the passing of Gordon Clare Rutherford on September 8, 2018 at Victoria Hospice after a 2-year journey with cancer.  He is predeceased by his parents Clare and Mary and siblings Norma (Roy) and Harold (June).

Gord is survived by his loving wife Jane of 48 years and their children Scott (Kyla) and Laurel (Ben) and grandchildren (Cole, Logan, Brodie, Connor, Cassidy, Makenna, Zachary and Sophia) and brother Glenn (Jan) and family in Australia and Ontario.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Gord moved to Victoria at 16 years old.  He graduated from Vic High and began his career working for the Province of BC for 37 years at the Textbook Branch, Motor Vehicle Branch and the Provincial Emergency Program.

He enjoyed soccer, golfing, curling, 10-pin bowling, fastball and playing slo-pitch, especially with the Raiders. He valued spending time camping at Honeymoon Bay for the past 40 years.  He loved going on ball trips and vacations with family and friends especially with the ball teams to St. George.  Dad cherished the company of his family, friends and neighbors.

A Celebration of his Life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Agency or Victoria Hospice.

Such a great loss for Jane and your family. I met Gord when I was ten years old as my little league coach. He was such a big influence on me and I see it in every member of your family, yes even in you Ben. He was my mentor, but most of all he was my friend. It is spooky because he had a way of getting you to do what he wanted and made you think it was your idea. I will miss him but I can’t imagine the loss you are feeling and only hope you will heal. Love to you all. Greg and Minnie

I’m truly heartbroken to hear of Gord’s passing. He looms large in my good memories while working at PEP and I’ll always remember him with a glint in his eye and a smile on his face. He was definitely one of the good guys who went out of his way to help people and, for all his joking around, he could offer a sympathetic ear when needed. I can’t tell you how delighted I was when he came to my retirement dinner last year and I’m so glad I got to tell him how much it meant to me when I visited with him. He treasured his family and was so proud of all of you. My deepest condolences to you Jane, Scott and Laurel and to the rest of your family.

  • Kelly Mann

Jane & family…………….my sympathies on the passing of a great sportsman. Playing ball against him so many years ago at Central Park and then seeing him years later enjoying slo-pitch at the BC Seniors Games was an indication of what a friendly and caring man he was.
He will not be forgotten. Revel in the memories and know he was loved by so many.

So very sorry to hear the sad news, my deepest sympathies to all of you. Words are so inadequate to express sorrow, but it is heartfelt. He was one of those people who made a lasting impact. So many wonderful memories from our time working together and the fun and crazy things he did, but always with a smile and a great laugh – and a terrific crib player! Always there when you needed help or just to listen or share a laugh, he was unique. I am so glad he was part of my life, as a co-worker and friend, for so many years. Jack joins me in sending condolences and remembering good times at MVB and PEP.
