Maria Huber (nee Roethel), died peacefully on July 27, 2017, at the Priory surrounded by her loving family, after an adventurous life well lived.

Maria was born and raised in Munich, Germany. She developed a love for children early on, working as a kindergarten teacher and youth worker. In the 1950’s, she took a solo trip via ocean liner to New York and then travelled to Victoria, BC where she joined her mother and siblings, working first as a waitress at the Empress, and then as a kindergarten teacher. She then returned to Munich, Germany and married the love of her life, Karl Huber, in 1957. By 1963, she was the proud mother of four children. In 1974, the family immigrated to Victoria, BC, first settling in the Blenkinsop Valley, and then making a home on the West Shore. After losing her husband in 1989, she found joy as beloved Oma to five cherished grandchildren.

Maria lived courageously and was willing to take risks in order to better her life. She dealt with several serious health issues and other crises throughout her life but handled them all with grace and courage, developing a keen interest in natural healing and nutrition. A person of deep faith, she lived a life of gratitude, no matter what came her way and had amazing strength and a positive attitude. She was an inspiring role model on how to be a kind wife, mother, Oma and friend of the planet.

Maria was a lifelong learner, seamstress, musician, and nature lover, with a dry sense of humour and sparkle in her eye. She was innately creative and was always doing something –painting, baking, crafting – that would bring joy to others. This extended to the end of her life where at the age of 90 in the last week of her life she coloured over 20 pictures, and knitted baby clothes, despite poor vision and shaky hands.

Maria is lovingly remembered by her children Bernadette (Dan) MacIsaac, Benedikt (Nora) Huber, Anna-Maria Huber, Henriette Lem, Ken Lem, and her beloved and cherished grandchildren Benedikt and Tobias MacIsaac, Maria-Claire (Steve) Clarke, Karlissa Lem and Gregory Huber, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

To Celebrate Maria’s Life, a funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross Church, 4049 Gordon Head Road, Victoria, BC V8N 3X7  at 10 a.m. on August 5, 2017, reception following.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Priory for their care and support of Maria.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Parkinson’s Society of BC.
