August 3 1927 – November 14, 2007

Died suddenly in his 80th year at his favourite place, Sechelt BC. Sadly predeceased by his wife Peggy, son Douglas and friend Linda. Deeply loved and missed by his family, daughters Cathy (Wally) Chernoff, Pat (Rob) Metcalfe, Nancy (Don) McLaren, son Rob and grandchildren Nick, Jess, Dylan, Amber, Bryce and Mitchell.

Hugh was raised in Vancouver, BC, where he attended McGee High School with his lifelong friend Gordon Winter (Cleona). After a wide assortment of jobs, Hugh decided it was time to start out on his own. Founding Mohawk Oil Co. in 1960, it was the beginning of a long and fulfilling dream. During these years, many lasting friendships were developed all throughout BC and Alberta. He was a brilliant businessman, a keen sportsman, an honest gentleman, a versatile athlete, and above all, a proud family man. Throughout all his accomplishments, success never spoiled the boyish enthusiasm of Hugh Sutherland. Starting his own foundation in the 1980’s, his generous support of such organizations such as the Salvation Army, BC Cancer Society and UBC libraries will never go unnoticed. He was a caring friend, a great listener, an enthusiastic storyteller, and above all the greatest dad and grandpa anyone could ask for. We are all so proud to have been apart of his life.

We would like to thank all of Dad’s friends and family that were able to make his 80th birthday a very special occasion.

“We won’t say goodbye, we’ll say goodbye for now.”

No service will be held at Hugh’s request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

There will be a gathering of friends and family on Sunday, November 25, 2007 from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm at the Boathouse Restaurant in Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver.
