John Edwin Smith, passed away at the age of 94 years , on August 15, 2003 in the Chandler Pavilion of the Glengarry Hospital.

Survived by five children: Norman (Cecilia), of Costa Mesa, Calif.; Ronald, (Elizabeth), of Ottawa, ON; Murray, of Sydney, Australia; Janet, of Toronto, ON; and Brian, (Sayoko), of Ottawa, ON; six granddaughters: Laurel Ann, Cheryl-Lynn, Kimberley, Kelli, Melanie and Kathie, and two grandsons: Douglas and Grant, as well as eight great-grandchildren. Also survived by one sister, Alison “Babe” Warren of Victoria and sister-in-law, Geraldine Grant of Long Beach, California, as well as many nieces and nephews who were very important to him.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Olive, (nee Grant), in 1989 and by three sisters: Dorothea Stafford, Norine Tubman and Reita Robson.

Born in Keewatin, ON, 23 July 1909, Ed came to Victoria at the age of two. Following his apprenticeship in Pharmacy at the Owl Drug Store, he was employed as an assistant in the pharmacy of the Royal Jubilee Hospital in 1930 and was promoted to Chief Pharmacist in 1932. He held this position until his retirement in 1973. During his career in pharmacy, Ed had many outstanding achievements. He joined the American Pharmaceutical Association in 1937 and the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists in 1942 as a Charter Member. He was a Charter Member of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists in 1947, vice-president of the BC branch in 1948, and president of the society in 1957-58. He was named a Fellow of the Society in 1968 and in 1972 was presented with the Ortho Award for distinguished service to the Society and to the pharmaceutical profession. Ed was made an Honorary Member of the Canadian Pharmaceutical Association in 1974 and an Honorary Life Member of the College of Pharmacists of BC in 1976.

He was also a long time member of the Kinsmen and K-40 clubs of Victoria.

Ed and Olive built their home on Lincoln Road in Oak Bay in 1936, raising their children there and he remained in that house until illness forced his move to a care home in 1998.
