With sadness, but with hearts full of happy memories, our Mom, Granny, Gee-Gee, and Auntie passed away peacefully on March 20th, 2018 after a wonderful, full life at the age of 98.

A native daughter born to Douglas and Ethel Fletcher on August 28, 1919. Predeceased by her parents, the love of her life Kenneth Shaw Lawson and sister Dorothy Aspol. Survived by loving daughter Bette (Rob) McAdams; son Murray (Bea) Lawson; grandchildren, Brad (Bonnie) McAdams, Darren (Kim) McAdams, Tracy (Ty) Whittaker, Courtney (Matthew) Doyle and Matt (Gina) Lawson; 14 Great Grandchildren; Nephew Brian Winsby; Nieces Denise Inglis and Linda (Colin) Campbell as well as extended family in the USA.

At 15 years of age, Mom met her future husband, Ken, at Uplands Golf Club.  Married in the Summer of 1941, they had a long, loving, happy marriage sharing each other’s company and a passion for the game of golf throughout their 55 year marriage.

Mom leaves a legacy of remarkable golfing accomplishments. While proud of her golfing career, she was always the Lady, modest in regards to her many victories and equally gracious in the defeats. It started in 1938 with a victory at The Empress Midwinter Tournament and continued for the next 50 years competing at local, Provincial and National levels. Along the way, winning the Uplands Ladies Championship 20 times, The Victoria and District Ladies Championship 3 times, a member of the BC Amateur Teams 13 times (12 at the Senior level), Victoria City Seniors Champion, BC Seniors Champion twice, and was ranked tied for 9th in the ratings of Canada’s top 10 Senior Ladies Golfers.

Mom and Dad loved to travel and had many wonderful trips over the years, enjoying many of those travels with a series of lifelong friends. Later in her life, her greatest pleasure was derived from her family. She will be forever missed by all who knew and loved her.

Special thanks to Wendy Eastgaard who helped Mom maintain her independence for as long as possible and the Staff of Berwick House on Shelbourne who provided exceptional care.

A Celebration of Joan’s Life will be held at Uplands Golf Club on May 12th, 2018 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Donations in her memory can be made to Victoria Hospice or a Charity of your choice.

Condolences to the family and memories can be shared at www.mccallgardens.com.

Bette – I just read the sad notice about your mother in the newspaper. She was such a lovely lady and a great friend for my mother (Marjorie Campbell). She was a fun person to talk to and to play bridge with. It certainly is a privilege to have known her.
