João (John) Pereira passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 54 years, Maria de Simas Pereira, and his two children, Norberta (Eddie) and
John (Janice). He will also be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Daniel, Jessica, Colton, Jocelyn, and Jamie as well as Brandon and countless extended family and friends.

Born in Achadinha, São Miguel, Azores to Manuel and Marianna, he was the third youngest of eight children. At the age of twenty-five, he immigrated to Canada and started working at a cedar mill in Terrace and then for Alcan in Kitimat. After marrying the love of his life, Maria, in 1967, they moved to Victoria and started a family.

João became a journeyman carpenter and even built his own home as a second-year apprentice. His amazing carpentry handiwork can be found in the Vinha Nova, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, throughout Victoria and especially in the homes of his children.

He was an avid gardener, growing his own fruits and vegetables and his grandchildren enjoyed the fruits of his labour (literally). João loved camping, clam digging on the beach, Sunday drives and of course, ice cream from the Beacon Drive-In.

His family meant the world to him, and he treasured all the time spent with them. João personified grit and resilience throughout his life. He will never be forgotten for his generous and loving nature. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all.

A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4635 Elk Lake Drive, on Monday, June 6, 2022, at 9 am. A reception to follow at the church hall.  Service virtual link below which will be accessible 5 minutes prior to the service:
