Dad began his life’s journey in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, the son of Ukrainian immigrants seeking opportunity in Canada. An opportunity that he personally grasped and worked incredibly hard to share with all his family. He is predeceased by his parents John and Patricia, his loving wife Eleanor, and beloved son Peter. He is survived by siblings Katherine and Bill (Maureen), brother in law Bunny. He greatly missed his predeceased in-laws Murray, Genie, Gloria, and Henry. Left to mourn his passing are his children David and Janice, grandchildren Alexander, Mark, Ashley (Chaz), Jesse (Tasha), Aaron (Andrea), Sarah (Donovan), Deven, Corey (Mara), Quentin and Kellianne, great-grandchildren Evan, Lucy, Isaac, Clara, Alice, Anson and Cullen. Children from marriage Brenda, Bill and Meredith, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dad’s childhood was a rich tapestry of tall tales, adventures and eccentric characters that enthralled us for years as he was a superb storyteller. Like many Depression-era children, he worked hard to support his family. Tending the land, shining shoes, icing trains and painting grain elevators. His passion was football, both playing and cheering for Saskatchewan teams. His focus was ultimately on education though. A value that he instilled in his children. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Saskatchewan and his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Alberta. University life brought him many lifelong friends, classmates and most importantly his wife Eleanor.

Dad returned to Moose Jaw to practice dentistry and start his family. Even though the decision was finally made to relocate to Victoria, he always had a special place in his heart for the prairies. In Victoria, his professional career and family thrived due to his hard work.  He served his profession at the Victoria and District Dental Society and the BC College of Dental Surgeons, receiving numerous awards and honors to acknowledge his efforts. Dad had an amazing rapport with his patients and colleagues and every day at the office was a social visit as well as providing exceptional health care.

Home life revolved around family and friends, fishing and football. Many a fine day was spent on his boat the Vega. Nothing was more important for him though than supporting his extended family in any way he could. He greatly enjoyed his trips to Ukraine to explore his family roots. He reveled as the family grew and prospered. His later life was not so kind to him though. Losing a child was devastating for him and he devoted himself to his life partner Eleanor as she slipped away from us from dementia. Eventually, his personal health began to fail. Even so, his smile never diminished, he enjoyed every day to the minute, and his love and support of family was total and unconditional. He is greatly loved, dearly missed and honored.

Thanks to his many doctors and caregivers for supporting Dad and the family over the years. Special thanks to his caregiver and friend Roma.

Dad will be interred at a private family function. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the Victoria Golf Club, 1100 Beach Drive from 3:00 – 6:00 pm. We welcome all his friends, colleagues, and patients to attend and share their memories of this very special man.

To Dr. John Zaparinuk’s family- Please accept my condolences Iam sorry for your loss. I have fond memories working as a dental assistant for your Dad at the Scott Block in Moose Jaw. One memory I have of Dr. Zap was his interest in running, everyday over lunch he would run at the “Y” and I always remember how he enjoyed his cigar. I know he will be dearly missed by his loving family.
Sincerely Carrol Morkin ( Morkin )

Dear David and family, I was sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. Even though it has been a long time since I have seen him I have fond memories of him supporting me in my early days of practice without any reservations. He was always very helpful and I learned a lot from him. No problem was too small to help you with. He supported you and our ball team when you were 12 and I was 22. Big cheering section from John! I’m sure you will miss him terribly but I’ll bet you have many fond memories as well. So good to reconnect with you a few years ago and all the best. Sincerely Paul Beesley
