John passed away peacefully on February 5, 2021 with his wife Barbara by his side. Born in Victoria on October 14, 1934 to parents Fred and Edna Hurley (nee Penty). He was predeceased by his sister Kathleen and brother Dennis. John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara, his children Jan (Mark), Doug (Trish), Susan (Brent), and his grandchildren, he was always so interested in their lives and proud of them. He is also survived by his brother Ron (Connie).
John was a welder and metal fabricator by trade and worked on many projects around Victoria. He most enjoyed working on boats and used his skills on many, including the landing craft Aurora Explorer. He was also the maintenance manager at Oakland Fisheries.
John loved his hunting trips to the Chilcotin over the years and weekly practice trap shoots with his good friends from the Vancouver Island Rangers. A man who could build and fix anything, he was also an enthusiastic ham radio operator. Camping, hiking, fishing and beachcombing were activities he enjoyed with his family. He was a kind and gracious man, a loving husband, father and grandfather.
John’s family gives heartfelt thanks for the wonderful care he received from the staff at Aberdeen Lansdowne Unit for the past few years.
A family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Sandy and Monty Fulton Dear Doug. Monty and I would like to offer you our condolences on the recent passing of your dear Dad John. Of course we both remember you with fondness from back in the days at Mount Doug. You may remember the paddle you made for us which still holds a place of honour in our home. Monty recalls your Dad’s fine welding work on the small boat that once belonged to you and to your Dad. Our son, Kaj, and our grandson Kade, continue to use the boat for crabbing and fishing adventures off Victoria’s waterfront. We were very sorry to read of your Dad’s passing and send our kindest regards to your Mum Barbara, to Jan, Susan and families and of course to you and your family.

Deborah McEwen Even as a teenager I remember thinking Mr. Hurley was a very nice man. As an adult it was always a pleasure to cross paths. I shall remember him fondly.
