Julie was a graduate from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1952 in Victoria where she met her husband. Mike’s career in the Navy took the family from Saskatchewan to Victoria, Winnipeg, Halifax, Buckham’s Bay near Ottawa, and Lahr in Germany.  Following retirement, Mike and Julie returned to Victoria in 1986, the city that had a special place in their hearts.

Julie was Mike’s caregiver for over 25 years where her knowledge from training and experience as a nurse served them well until his death in 2015. “Only angels become nurses!”, he would say. Julie was also an active volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society and the Victoria Stroke Recovery Association (VSRA) accepting the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Stroke Recovery Association of British Columbia. She was also awarded a Valued Elder Recognition Award (VERA) from the University of Victoria.

Julie volunteered most of her adult life at local churches and other organizations whether she made pyrohys and holubtsi, baked, drove, dispatched, gardened, donated plants, sang, sewed, quilted, did bookkeeping, sold raffle tickets at malls or worked in thrift stores. Julie was a skilled and knowledgeable gardener, inspiring others, and putting her talents to good use, including at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and Government House in Victoria, as well as on the beautiful grounds of her home. Julie had also enjoyed playing tennis, lawn bowling, roller- blading, swimming and walking.

The family would like to express deep appreciation for the assistance of Victoria Hospice’s Palliative Care at Home Team and family physician Dr. Gilbert Chew.

A Covid-restricted funeral service for the family will be held on June 29th, 2021 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Victoria, with a reception at the Sequoia Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:  Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 4040 Nelthorpe St, Victoria, BC, V8X 2A1; St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church, 1112 Caledonia Avenue, Victoria, BC V8T 1G1; Victoria Hospice Foundation, 1952 Bay St., Victoria, BC V8R 1J8 or a charity of your choice.
