Kay passed away peacefully on the afternoon of July 22nd, 2019 in Victoria, B.C. with her niece, Sharon, by her side.  She was born in Calgary, Alberta, the youngest child of Andrew and Jean MacKay Buchan.  Kay was predeceased by her dear husband, Robert Chapman, who passed away in 1955; sisters, Elizabeth Hurford and Margaret Emmerson; brother, Hugh Buchan; nieces, Susan Hurford Statham and Jean Buchan, nephew David Buchan, and great niece Cathy Statham.

Kay is survived by her loving nieces, Sharon Wickware, Edna Buchan (Peter) and Evelyn McKay; nephews, Gary Emmerson (Bonnie) and Andrew Buchan (Susan);  5 great nephews, Craig, Steven, Brian, Byron, and Matthew; 4 great nieces, Cindy, Nancy, Tara, and Sarah; 7 great-great nephews, Jordan, Justin, Evan, David, Cassius, Mateo, and Glen; 5 great-great, nieces, Hillary, Sabrina, Phoenix, Aleysha, Amaya, and Evelyn’s granddaughter, Kinley;  Alan Statham, a long time much loved friend whom Kay lovingly thought of as another nephew, and Margaret McIntosh, niece by marriage, and her closest friend, Roberta Loomis, a friend since high school, early work mate and occasional travel companion.

Kay worked for the Royal Bank of Canada for 10 years before she started her career in 1955 as a ticket agent for Pacific Western that was bought out by Canadian Airlines and retired after 35 years in the airline industry from Air Canada.

Kay became our inspiration as she shared gifts, stories and slides of her yearly travels and great adventures to distant destinations around the world, sometimes on tour but often on her own.  Lighting the way for other family members to get the travel bug as well.  Kay was an amazingly positive and caring person, had an extraordinary sense of humor, and was an extremely kind and gracious lady.  She leaves behind many family and long time friends, some from her early days at Pacific Western Air Lines and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A heartfelt thank you must go out for the amazing, respectful and gentle care Kay received from the 7th floor nursing staff and the many others who work there at The Selkirk Seniors Village.

Honoring Kay’s request there will be no service.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I am sad to discover about Aunt Kay’s passing. After the death of uncle Bobby Chapman, it was many years before Aunt Kay and I were in touch, although I know that my father was in touch regularly until he passed away.

I would telephone Aunt Kay occasionally at Richmond before her memory started to go.

Kay never shared much about her own direct family, but I am pleased that family was with her. I will advise the Chapmans who remember her, always fondly.

I came to know Kay after she hurt her shoulder in Victoria some years ago and I was privileged to help with her recovery care and take walks with her while enjoying good conversation. It was lovely to see the interaction between her sister Margaret and niece Sharon. They cared greatly for each other. Sharon was a special blessing to her mom and to her aunt as she ensured their last years were as fulfilling as they could be.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Sharon and family and all Kay’s family and friends as they work their way through their loss. Treasure all those good memories! Sending love and hugs to you all.

I remember Kay very well as when I first Joined PWA she worked at the CTO (city ticket office) in Vancouver. At that time I worked in reservations. She was always very pleasant and we had some mutual friends who lived In Australia. I didn’t see her after I moved to Vancouver Airport. My condolences to Sharon.

  • Tom and Beth Pengelly

Our sincere condolences to all of Kay’s family hoping your loss is offset by the sense of relief that Kay is at peace and will be free from any further suffering. We have enjoyed visits with Kay over many years at her home in Richmond or meeting Kay and Sharon to enjoy a meal & visit together, or at family celebrations. Sharon and her family have been part of our family extension for many years. Kay has been so blessed to have the devoted loving care given to her by Sharon, by Brooke (Sharon’s daughter-in-law), also help given to Kay by Steve & Brian, as well as by the staff at Kensington and more recently at Selkirk Seniors Village!! May your happy memories sustain you through the months ahead!!
