We very sadly announce the passing of our mother, Kathleen Olive Patterson, at the age of 94, on June 4, 2021.  Kathleen was born in Victoria, on September 4th, 1926, to Harold and Helen Mitchell (nee Cousens) She was predeceased by her parents and six siblings, and by our father, John Hunter Patterson in 2015.  Kay is survived by her children; Marilyn (Len), Margaret (Bob), Cathy, Michael (Lynn), David, Ron (Julie) and Richard (Heidi), as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She met her loving husband in 1945 while he was in the R.C.A.F stationed at Patricia Bay.

When the war was over, he returned and they were married. They built their first house when Kathleen was 19 and John was 23. She was a very dedicated wife, mother and homemaker and along with all the work of raising seven children, there were always cakes, pies, loaves, cookies, canning and a virtually spotless house and almost always music and the smells of cooking and baking coming from the kitchen. Christmas and birthdays brought the most wonderful treats and thoughtful gifts! She was a teacher of morals and ethics, of logic and common sense and of love and compassion.

Mother was a tireless, selfless worker who always made sure our Sunday clothes were kept nice, our school clothes were clean and mended and that our play clothes were thoroughly patched! She had a clean sense of humour and loved a slightly naughty joke! She truly loved her babies and her pets. Unfortunately, in Mum’s later years she developed a relatively fast-moving macular degeneration and was unable to continue enjoying some of her hobbies. However, she had travelled across Canada several times to visit some of our Aunts and Uncles, been to Disneyland, to Hawaii, and joined her daughters on many Alaska Cruises which she really enjoyed.  Mum was a very thoughtful, caring and kind person and we miss her very much. Cremation will be followed by a Celebration of our Mum’s life at a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated, to the UBC macular degeneration research department at “give.ubc.ca/kathleen-patterson
