Lois Verchomin passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospice surrounded by the loving presence of her family.

Mom was grateful to be healthy to the end and able to engage in life so fully. Her family is very thankful to have shared so much time with her; she was such a loving presence in all of our lives.

Lois was born in Okotoks, Alberta, the daughter of Pat and Lillian Nichols and the eldest of six girls. After being raised in Black Diamond, she moved to Edmonton where she attended the University of Alberta. There she met her husband, Eldon, and graduated as an elementary school teacher.

After raising her five children in Edmonton, she remarried and enjoyed many wonderful winters golfing with Orest and their friends in Palm Desert.

In 2015, Lois moved to Victoria to be closer to some of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took so much delight in spending time with the little ones! Although she missed spending time with her dear friends in Edmonton, Mom loved her new home at Carlton House and the friends she made there.

Mom was loving, positive and supportive, always there for her family and friends. She had a wry sense of humour and was always ready to laugh, most particularly at the quirks and meanders of her own life.

All who knew her felt her grace and joy.

Lois was predeceased by her parents, Pat and Lillian, and her sisters, Jean, Muriel and Trisha.  She will be sadly missed by her two remaining sisters, Marion and Carol; her five children, Trudy David, Doug Foote, Dean Foote (Wendy), Laurie Evans, Robert Foote; her grandchildren, Téana David, Nigel David (Danielle), Chantal David (Mike), Julian David, David Foote (Caroline), Sean Foote (Fernanda), Abraham Foote, Brayden Foote (Charlene), Ryan Foote (Selena), Rachel Evans Schiller (Jesse), Leilani Evans, Fletcher Evans, Daniel Evans; her great grandchildren, Tyler, Dylan, Kaelin and Bella David, Riley and Parker Foote and Dayva Schiller.  She also leaves Orest’s children, John, Laurie, David (Jackie) and Michael Verchomin, as well as their extended family. She will be missed by her many nephews, nieces and friends.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Victoria Hospice for the loving care they provided for Mom in her last few days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St Paul’s United Church Children’s Fund, Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, Victoria Hospice or a charity of your choice.

Your Mom was a warm, classy gal – loved hearing all the stories about all the beautiful Nichols gals and how they turned many a head in the Black Diamond area. Thank goodness we had some family reunions so we could all connect and hear the tales. Warm and sincere sympathy.

I believe, if we could have the opportunity of choosing the very nicest person in the world, we would choose Lois. She was a beautiful person in every way. One day Lois told me that turning 90 was very different from turning 89. I think Lois left us just the way we would all like to go & that must be of help for her large family. We were told, at the Residents Meeting at Carlton House this afternoon that there will be a Tea at 2:30 on Sunday. My son regularly visits me every Sunday at 3:00pm but I hope to be with you for the beginning.

Auntie Lois as she liked me to refer to her was special to many. A close friend of my mom’s since Theta’s. Auntie Lois seemed to be the go to friend for calming, direction, common sense and support. She was my unofficial God Mother. She touched me by remembering me in special ways. A calendar from Sapporo Olympics, a book “Famous Hockey Players” and a sweater jacket she knitted, I was so proud to wear.
When ever we talked, it was like we hadn’t quite finished our last conversation and it continued where we left off. When saying good-bye, you always felt good.

    Thinking of you all,

    Alan Mason

    Dear family,
We are very sorry to hear of the passing of Lois, your dear Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Lois was a long time friend of Olga Myroniuk. They often said they were like sisters to each other. We enjoyed our visits with Lois at our house, celebrating Olga’s birthdays or at Olga and Nick’s house in McKernan. Later, Lois took time to visit Olga weekly at Riverbend Retirement Home and they had lunch together and talked. Lois always had a positive outlook, was very pleasant and we enjoyed hearing about all of you, her family. She loved you very much!
May warm memories guide and comfort you. Love, Ted and Doreen Myroniuk

Foote kids…..it makes me sad. I feel your sorrow at the loss of your wonderful Mom, who was the dear and best friend of my Mom….. They are up in heaven having a hug together looking down and feeling blessed at a wonderful long life and wonderful kids and family they have! It does not make it any easier for us though does it. Somehow, I now know……. my heart is constantly filled with my Mom and yours will be too. How blessed we have been to have these women in our lives. I wish I was there to give you all a hug.
    Love from Donna Assaly
