Man Wai Lee passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 28, 2021 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC at the age of 98. Predeceased by his wife, Kwan Tai in 1999; he will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his children John (Alice), Jim (Margaret), Gordon (Amy), and Bonnie (Geof) Jay; grandchildren Jaimie, Samantha, Matthew, Olivia, Amanda, and Isaiah; and many friends and family.

Born and raised in Hung Mee, Guangdong, China on March 31, 1923, Man Wai furthered his studies in Shanghai before returning to Hung Mee where he met and married his wife, Kwan Tai. Together, they moved to Hong Kong in 1952 with their eldest son, John, where they resided and continued to raise their growing family. In 1968, the family of six made the brave decision to immigrate to Victoria, BC.

Despite the challenges of moving to a new country, Man Wai continued to work hard to provide for his family. He was a proud and active member of the local Chinese-Canadian community as well as a longstanding and respected member of the Chinese Presbyterian Church and Lee’s Benevolent Association in Victoria. After retiring from a career as a butcher, he continued to maintain a busy and active lifestyle. He went out every day and enjoyed spending his time sharing meals and having coffee with family and friends, making day trips to Vancouver with friends, listening to Cantonese opera, and inviting his friends over to watch his vast video collection of Chinese TV series, movies, concerts, and more. A faithful Christian, he never missed a Sunday Worship and actively supported his Church. Man Wai was always happy to lend a helping hand and will be fondly remembered as a kind, quiet, gentle, and loving father and grandfather, and a very generous friend.

Special thanks to the staff at the Victoria Chinatown Care Centre as well as the doctors and nurses at Royal Jubilee Hospital 4 North for their kindness and compassionate care.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family service will be held on Friday, June 11 at 2:00 pm.
