Margaret passed away peacefully at Saanich Peninsula Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit. She is survived by her husband William (Bill) Smith, her brother William (Bill) McKibben, sister-in-law Beth, niece Robin, nephew Michael, and great nephews Adam and Brent. The Smith side of the family included her brother and sister-in-law Wayne and Anne and nephews Tyler (Sarah) and Scott.
She was pre-deceased by her parents William (Bill) and Verna McKibben, grandparents Evelyn and George Clark, mother-in-law Mary and father-in-law Fred Smith.
Born in Victoria, Margaret spent her formative years living by “Colwood corners”. She loved visiting her father and uncles at their service station in Fairfield, and going on outings with her grandmother to shop and go to a café. After graduating from Belmont High School, she worked for the Ministry of Health in the legislative buildings. She married Bill in 1971, and they moved throughout the province for his job, living in Kitimat, Victoria, Cranbrook, North Vancouver and Nelson. In 1997 she chose to return to her beloved “Island” and spent her remaining years living in Sidney. She was an avid reader her whole life, and in later years loved watching old movies on TCM. She enjoyed multiple vacations in Parksville from her childhood to recent years.
She retrained in her later years and loved her job as a Unit Clerk at Royal Jubilee Hospital.
Many thanks to the VIHA nurses and care aides who helped her live at home after becoming ill, and Dr. Ambrose Marsh who adopted her as a patient in her time of need. There will not be a service by request. As a lifelong “cat person”, in lieu of flowers please donate in her memory at your local SPCA.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.
