Mary Joan was born on February 14, 1938 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.  She passed away June 17, 2020 at home in Victoria after a brief illness.  The time she had back at home was a gift and she left us peacefully, surrounded by close family.  Mom can now join her beloved husband Bill who left us in 2011.  She is survived by son Stuart, daughter Cindy Pacey (Brian), granddaughter Krysta and great-grandson Xav.  Mary Joan is also survived by her brother Mike McMordie (Claire) and sister Kate Pollock (Allan) and many more relatives and friends.  We are forever grateful for the compassionate care mom received at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria Hospice Society and the wonderful private homecare she received.

We will have a celebration of Mom’s life at a later date.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I became friends with Mary Joan during our time with the Saanich Volunteer Organization. She had a way of making friends with everyone. She always captivated our attention with some interesting news or stories of her family which she loved dearly.

What a lovely woman Mary Joan was!

Her bright smiling eyes, infectious giggle, and always full of news to share.

I will always remember my visits over the years, first as the youngest in our family of 4, then just my mum and I, and then quite a few years ago a visit with my boyfriend at the time. She always opened up her home & heart with good cheer and fantastic memories. She will be missed greatly.

Deepest sympathies to the whole family during this very difficult time.

Dear Stuart, Cindy,Krysta, Zav and extended family,
Mary Joan was my cousin and will be remembered with affection by myself, my husband Ted ,and our daughter Naomi . Our most memorable visit with her and Bill was one the three of us made in approx. 1997 to Victoria and the mainland. She and Bill met Ted and Naomi for the first time there. I have many other memories of her just prior to her marriage, then with her young children, and once in St Albert around 1971 when I worked for two years North East of Lesser Slave Lake ( Wabasca and Desmarais ).

I am glad she was able to spend her last days at home , with good care and with family around her, despite the pandemic .
Thinking of you as you grieve her loss,
Catherine Helwig ( Shin ) and Ted Shin
