Nicholas died on April 16, 2018 at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC after a sudden illness. Nick was born in Dundee, Scotland on July 10, 1943 into an RCAF family that was posted to Patricia Bay, BC in 1945 , and thereafter to numerous locations in Canada and the US. He attended school in England before beginning at McGill University in 1962 (maths and physics) and later continuing his studies at UVic.

After a freewheeling period characteristic of the 60’s (and Nick), he settled in to a career with BC Systems as an IT administrator until his retirement in 2001. Nick was admired by all for his humour and quick wit, his deep erudition and interests.

Predeceased by his sister Kitty; he is survived by his spouse Jean; godsons Johannes and Michael; step daughter Claire; brother Rodney; nieces Kate, Sara, Claudette, and Morgan; nephew Will; uncle Frank; cousin Greg; sister-in-law Helen; and many old friends who remember his kindness and keep a special place in their hearts for him.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

To Nick’s family, at this sad time, I hope you are together, remembering the good things. I met Nick through friends, and again at the human resources area of a job I was applying for. He took the time to ask me how I was, and to offer advice about what to mention on my application. This resulted in not only a long contract, but also in permanent work. The savings then contributed to completing a degree. Nick was always helpful, and I learned many basic skills due to his ability to explain things, and to motivate. I was very happy to see him married, and retired, although the loss was felt in the workplace. When someone passes, try to remember that life is eternal and no one is ever far.

Farewell to a wise and wonderful brother. I will never forget that wonderful trip to the BC interior in 1982, and how we escaped from the clutches of Boot Lake (the ‘Slough of Despond’ as Nick called with his characteristic wit)

  • Melanie Pereira

Sad news. I extend my deepest condolences to Nick’s wife, family, friends and all who loved him. Nick was a kind, thoughtful, and generous man. I will never forget his kind generosity he showed to my son and I many, many moons ago. Once in awhile, our paths would cross “in town” and he always had a moment for a friendly chat. The world is diminished with his passing. Godspeed, my Friend.

Heart felt condolences to all who knew and loved our wonderful uncle Nick.
So many happy memories will stay with us forever.
Sail well across the oceans beyond dear uncle and friend.

I had the great fortune of knowing Nick for fifty +/- years. My best memories are from the several weeks we were ship mates as we sailed from Mexico to French Polynesia in 1987 aboard my sailboat. What better companion than one that could wax so eloquently about any and every subject. I will miss the eclectic email links he sent, the wry wit, and his strong spirit.
    Travel on, my old friend

A very long friendship has reached an abrupt. fork in the road. Perhaps our paths may cross again further down the road.

Nick came into my life in 1966 when I needed his compassion and wisdom. His towering intellect and wit were immensely comforting.
God speed my dear old friend. And gratitude
