We, the Family of Opal Clarke, are so sad to announce that on Thursday November 18th 2021 at the age of 94, Opal passed away.   Opal deeply loved her family, friends and Hornby Island.  She leaves behind her daughter, Eulala, granddaughter Rachel and son-in-law Paul.

Opal began her love affair with Hornby in 1967, coming as often as she could, while also working as a psychologist.  She stayed at many houses and cabins until, in 1987, she was finally able to have her own perfect location on Whaling Station Bay.  With the help of many islanders and especially Chris Weixelbaumer, she created a home that was her passion and solace for the rest of her long life.  She was an active member of the Hornby Community for the next 32 years. She was able to stay in her beloved home well into her 90’s because of help from many in this community including Len and Chris Olsen, Kathy Suave and Samantha Lampson.

Opal was funny, determined and cared passionately about many things.  She will be forever in our thoughts and hearts and we treasure her legacy.   We will celebrate her life in the Spring of 2022.

If you wish to make a donation in her honour please consider any of the following, Whaling Station Bay Improvement District (for the community garden), New Horizons Society, Heron Rocks Friendship Society.

We were sorry to hear that Opal has passed away. We extend condolences to Eulala, Rachael and the rest of the family.
Opal always welcomed us over for a glass of wine or tea, when we came up to Hornby Island. We enjoyed many lively conversations and catching up on Hornby news; as we sat on her deck. She was a feisty lady who always showed an interest in what our family was doing.

    We will miss her!

Eulala and Rachael: My deepest sympathy in your loss of your mom Opal. She was very special to Pat and me and was the reason Pat fell in love with Hornby Island. We had many wonderful memories of Opal during our 30 years visiting Hornby. She was a wonderful lady and she and I had many conversations on books and we were both huge readers. The Devlin family wishes you solace as we all grieve. With much respect, John Devlin and Clan.
