Phon was the secretary for the social work department when I worked as a social worker. I always enjoyed working with her. She was always so positive and made working with her fun. I should also say very efficient as well. After I retired I always enjoyed seeing her at the Victoria Symphony. We would have a chat and get caught up on each others news. I also had a delightful tea with her once at her apartment.
I will miss seeing her at the Symphony. I have lost a friend and am very sad.
I have made a donation to Victoria Hospice in her name.

    To the Tim Family,

We are so very sad that our dear friend Phon has left us.
It was so hard to say “Good-Bye”.

Phon and Victor have known each other since childhood in Johannesburg, South Africa.
25 years ago we were so fortunate to have met up with her again in Victoria. Together with Shirley and Colin Lee, we enjoyed our monthly dinners when Phon held us captive with her compelling accounts of everyday events in such an eloquent fashion! We also shared the joy of classical music.
Phon loved books. Picture her every year in a long line up at the Times Colonist Book Sale, empty knapsack on her back. With great delight, she always filled it to capacity with a full load, including books for our two grand-daughters, now 27 and 24 whom she had known since birth! It was such a joy and so much fun to have Phon join our family
Christmas celebration for the last five years. She was family.

Phon was wise, funny, vibrant, gracious and kind – brave and stalwart in her trials.

We will cherish the memories and will miss her dearly, but know that she is now at peace in the arms of God, having lived a long, rich and happy life, supported by a caring, loving family and many, many wonderful friends.

    With our warmest sympathy,
    Pam and Victor Chang-Kue

It is so wonderful to read how much of an impact Aunty Phon had in everyone’s life. I have memories of Aunty Phon from when I was a little girl. She was this friend of my Grandparents who would come to visit from Victoria in her blue Volkwagen Beetle. She wore bright red lipstick and was always sure to give my brother an enthusiastic kiss on the cheek to leave a lipstick mark. We thought it was so hilarious. We would see Aunty Phon from time to time throughout my growing up. One day we were able to call her and inform her that we would be family, as I was to marry her cousin’s son. We forgot to inform her that she would fill in to be walked down the aisle to represent Colin’s mother at our wedding, but I think she got over it. When our children were born, she came to visit often, and the children formed a lovely bond with their “Iffy” Phon, Bradley had not gotten the pronunciation of Aunty quite right, but the name stuck. If not for her, Christmas mornings would not have photographic evidence. When her health became a bit of an issue with her hip and her knee, the physical visits to Vancouver became less, but Tuesday calls started. I cannot believe that our Tuesday calls have come to an end and our long chats into the late night, when visiting in person, will never happen again. I will miss hearing about all the family stories. She was a good historian for all things related to the Tim family and beyond. Thank you for being a wonderful example of a strong independent human. I look forward to being able to celebrate your life with those who will also miss you, when it is safer to gather, in the numbers that I know are out there.

Undaunted. If there is one word to describe a wise and wonderful woman with a generous spirt, it is undaunted. Phon was never overwhelmed or overtaken by the challenges presented to her. She faced everything that came along, and simultaneously taught anyone who knew her how to get through the obstacles of life by the way she would react to them. How often she would say, “Things change. Sometimes it takes awhile, but things change.” It was much easier to accept her “advice” because it was not offered in a patronizing way, but rather as an example that things were going to be better. All we had to do is be patient and wait. It was always her wit and outrageous sense of humour that will live in my memories forever. Phon lived her life fully and with grace. She was my neighbour and my friend. I cannot send her an email anymore. I cannot phone her. I will not see her walking to the drugstore around the corner. However, Phon will live in my heart, and I will never forget her. My condolences to the family.

When I saw Phon’s obituary, I was immediately cast back to the time when I knew her as a secretary when I was a social worker in 1987 at then Fairfield Health Centre. Along with that came feelings of affection. I recall her as a gracious, kind, interesting and competent woman. This is to honor her memory…Connie MacDonald

I had the great pleasure of knowing Phon for the last 10 years. I was the Manager, Volunteer Services at Victoria Hospice. Whle I worked there Phon had a regular volunteer shift on Friday afternoons. On a Friday afternoon after a long week, Phon would brighten my day with her wry comments and kind smile. Phon approached her volunteer role with seriousness, conscientiousness and caring. She also introduced me to the joys of Pacific Opera and lunch at the Dutch Bakery. Phon approached life with gusto. She faced challenges with humour and perservence. I admired her tremendously. She taught me how to age with grace and vigour. I will miss her.

Phon – back in the day when VGH was one big family – didn’t we have so many laughs and so many serious conversations about life and all. A conversation with Phon was always a delight – no matter how serious it always ended with a hug and laughter. She was one of a kind – and one of the most interesting people I ever knew – in that lovely bubble we all lived in then. RIP dear lady.

Phonyin and I met more than 60 years ago as 1st year students at the University of Witwatersround in Johannesburg South Africa. After graduation we emigrated from South Africa. Phonyin settled in Canada while my late husband Edward and I moved to Hong Kong where we worked for more than 30 years, raised a family and eventually retired in Melbourne Australia. We kept in touch over the years. Ive always admired Phonyin for her kindness, generosity and sense of humour.
She has been a dear friend and I will miss her greatly.

My husband Graham and I were enriched in our lives by a friendship with Phon, starting in South Africa before we immigrated to the USA and Canada. We had kept in contact over the years, and always loved receiving Phon’s Christmas letter detailing the year and her contact with her family and friends. We are the poorer for living in this world without her. Lanys and Graham Kaye-Eddie
