Born on May 4, 1931 in Toronto, Ontario, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2022, with family by her side. Predeceased by her parents Stan and Susan Mitchell, 2nd husband Jim Adkins and brother Stan. She will be sadly missed by her sons Philip (Bev) and Paul and daughter Maureen (Steve) and grandchildren Ryan (Marcede), Camella (Alex), Doug and Steven (Hannah), great-grandchildren Weston, Lochlan, Brody, Caiden and Cohen, her sister Miriam and her Aunt Irene, nieces and nephews.

Ruth grew up in Toronto where she attended Branksome Hall School. Ruth moved to Victoria in 1957 with her family and settled in Cadboro Bay where she raised her 3 children on her own. She was a wonderful mother and loved to cook, when we came home for lunch from school, she would have a hot meal waiting for us. She even cooked for our dogs; they ate very well. We had the best childhood where we made many friends, and some we remain close to still to this day.

Ruth met Jim later in life and they enjoyed 18 wonderful years together until he passed in 1999. Ruth was an accomplished writer, she wrote 2 novels and a poetry book, she loved to write. Over the last few years Ruth started sketching and drawing some amazing pictures. A heartfelt thank you for the care and kindness Ruth received over the years from paramedics, ER staff, Dr’s and nurses.

We love you mom you will forever be with us and in our hearts.

A celebration of life will be held in later spring.

When you feel you have no where to run,

Stop a moment to take in the comfort,

Of the sky – the stars, sun and moon fathomless.

Imagine the infinite possibilities life brings us.

Look to the sky and smile.

You will know the moon because we are all a part of this beauty.

Let the stars sing.

Let the sun pour over you.

Then still when you feel you have no where to run,

You will do it all over again.

Ruth Adkins

I met Ruth here at Lion’s Cove and very much enjoyed chatting with her in the afternoons when she would come down to the lobby to visit with a number of other ladies in the building. I have both her books and enjoyed reading them. May she rest in peace.

She was a kind, gentle person. I remember so many times Paul and I would do something dumb and she would not get made but just smile!

Auntie Ruth always had a smile and could light up a room. She loved to bake and cook for everyone. Ruth was an excellent cook, however, writing and art occupied her spare time and she had talent. Sure will miss your loving words as we all will. See you on the other side and enjoy the family reunion.
    With love, Darlene

I always loved the way Auntie Ruth saw the beauty in the simplest of things. She knew this is where true happiness is. She was always easy to talk to and always made me feel good about myself and people around her. I will miss you Auntie Ruth until we meet again. Love your Nephew Scott
