Born on February 14, 1928 in London, England, Sadie passed away on April 4, 2025 in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Sadie Pittner (GOD REST HER SOUL) was born Sadie Sarah Keil in London in 1928, 16 months before me, her sister Roz. We were so close in age that we were almost twins and behaved as though we were. However, our temperaments were totally different, I painfully shy, tiny and thin, she the outgoing one making friends very easily, she excelled in school, taking honors in most subjects and with a powerful singing voice, the two of us breaking into duets with gusto – so much so that she was encouraged to train for the opera, but to our traditional parents the opera was a no-no.
During WWII, we in London were subjected to the blitz when the bombing was constant day and night. Our house was destroyed and we moved North to a resort called Blackpool, where we were relatively safe for the remainder of the war. Sadie’s main interests were the sciences and she remained fascinated throughout her life. In 1949 with her husband Edward and their daughter Paula she emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada, to join one of our cousins who had married a Canadian officer during WWII.
From her marriage to Edward four beloved children were born, Paula, Edward, Diane and Stephen, then grandchildren Kirk and Trisha; Sonya and Robbie; and Alex. It was a heavy blow when Diane passed away at a much too young age. After the children were grown, Sadie returned to college to earn a teaching diploma and subsequently enjoyed many years of teaching. Meanwhile husband Edward built a successful realty company in Winnipeg. At retirement age they moved to Victoria as it reminded her of England and she was very happy there. After Edward passed away, she remained in Victoria until a few years ago when she relocated to Vancouver where son Edward was living. Due to various circumstances my husband Ivor and I were only able to visit her there twice, I believe she was content there and enjoyed the remainder of her life at Louis Brier Home and Hospital.
She was an exceptional person and will always be remembered fondly by my own family, my husband Ivor, my children and grandchildren.
Rest well my sister Sadie.
