Sohan (Sonnie) was born in Victoria to Bisa Singh and Tage Cour Jawl. Surrounded by family during his final days, he passed away peacefully at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Sohan is survived by his wife Roberta, his daughter Kelly, siblings Jeto, Karnel, Robert and Mohan, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.  He was predeceased by his sister Puge.

Sohan was a founding partner in Home Lumber and then a real estate business with his brothers which started over 60 years ago and continues to this day.  He retired from active involvement in 1982.  Those who remained were convinced that he would soon be bored and back to work within months.  Instead, he pursued a passion for thoroughbred horse racing, ultimately competing at the sport’s highest level. He traveled extensively — to Europe, Asia and the Middle East, interspersed with winters in Palm Springs. Closer to home, he was a fixture at Cordova Bay Golf Course and regular gatherings of relatives and friends, many hosted at his home in Deep Cove. He lived the good life and did so strictly on his own terms.

Sohan often remarked that growing old is not for the faint of heart. While hobbled by health issues later in life, which progressively restricted his activities, he accepted the limitations with grace and patience.

Sohan’s life proved rich with blessings. Among them, a father who had the courage to emigrate from India and settle in Canada, a mother who sacrificed everything for the welfare of her children, siblings whose shared experience, obstacles and ambitions resulted in an unbreakable bond that gave them all the confidence to chart their own course and a wife whose affection and care extended his life well beyond the expectation of any medical prognosis.

In his final days, Sohan felt at peace. While his parting is hard to bear, he has left us with innumerable memories of a life lived to the fullest. He was a true original, a real character. He will long be remembered and those recollections will invariably provoke a smile.  As he himself put it “all in all, I had one heck of a ride”.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Saanich Peninsula Hospital for their loving care in Sohan’s final days.

A private family service will be held at McCall Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation.

Indeed, a life well lived. I have a fond memory of Sonnie on the Cordova Bay Golf course. He was playing in front of us with his cronies – had a fancy golf cart (Mercedes, Cadillac ?? – not sure). We were walking the course and kept hitting into them!! My girl-friend, Kathy kept whispering “you know he’s one of the owners?” I said “so what? We don’t have all day.” Sonni was very gracious. My condolences to the family.
